Sainz in the McLaren posts the fastest time in testing so far, a 1:17.144. Of course, we know the big teams are sandbagging but it does hold promise for the McLaren this year.

It has bus good few years since we seem Mclaren regularly towards the front of the grid. So fingers crossed they have a competitive car. Lewis times his move to Mercedes with perfection I remember a lot of people questioning him at the time but I thought it was a wise move.

Indeed. Could the same be said of Alonso? Err, no.
What about Ricciardo? That one is still to be decided.

The difference between Hamilton and Bottas is more stark than ever. Hamilton is coolly saying how much he is enjoying driving the new W10 and posted an almost unseen "1:18.097 set on the C2 compound – a full six tenths quicker than the previous best time we have seen on that tyre" while most attention remained on the Ferrari.
Bottas, meanwhile, is whinging about "Mercedes not on Ferrari’s level yet" and whether he has the same status as Hamilton. Clearly not a believer in letting his driving do the talking.

Lewis is now saying that he believes Mercedes has a 0.5 second deficit to Ferrari, but then he pulled out a .002 second time so you never can tell. The driver in that respect has a lot more to do with it than a lot of people realise, and I have no doubt that Lewis and Mercedes were playing it cool throughout testing to some degree.
A mark of that is the Lewis is calm and doesn't look like he is under pressure. If they were that far behind he would probably already be less relaxed I suspect. Although I don't believe some of the baloney you will read online which says that Mercedes are already massively faster than Ferrari and will start slow and then build up their pace throughout the year, to avoid people asking too many questions.
Bottas is done, I am pretty sure he knows deep down that he can't match Lewis throughout a season which must be quite unpleasant, knowing that you are just not good enough whatever you do. I am sure he will just play second fiddle to Lewis for this year too.

I am sure he will just play second fiddle to Lewis for this year too. If Bottas looks like he's not trying then Mercedes will ditch him. There's no place for journeymen and while I was once a fan you can see in his eyes and hear in his whinging that he's accepted defeat.

Hah! No surprise at all. What took them so long?

Apparently, F1 wants to introduce an extra point for the fastest lap during the race. But the driver has to finish within the top 10. That seems illogical to me. Assuming that the likely beneficiary of that extra point happens to break down or crash during the race.

I suppose it's to stop a 'hero' lap in a car that cannot get to the finish line, for instance nearly out of fuel.

It prevents someone putting on the softest tyre which may only last one lap....the top runners couldn't afford to loose time time but anyone out of the points would surely have a go. Actually it would fun but it would be mayhem.

There is some info on the deal Sky has with C4 with regards to screening highlights of the races. Some of it looks quite restrictive, making the C4 coverage next to worthless.

Tis the way of the world.. Watching many sports to a decent degree entails multiple subscriptions as coverage fragments more and more.

Really sorry to hear this news when I woke up this morning. Charlie always seemed to be a permanent fixture in the sport and it will be a great loss F1.

Mercedes ahead in both FP1 and FP2. That does come as a surprise - or perhaps not! They were clearly sandbagging when Ferrari were making the headlines in Barcelona. The good news is that all the times are bunched up so racing is going to be a lot closer this year. www.planetf1.com/news/mercedes-up-the-ante-in-australia/

Exciting qualifying from Melbourne. A very surprised Mercedes team bags 1-2 with Red Bull mixed in with Ferrari. Lando Norris did something special to get the McLaren into 8th!

Are Williams going to become the laughing stock of F1 this season, and if so will they still be here next season ? And, will Alonso be kicking himself if McLarens car follows on from the pace it showed in qualifying ? Getting ready in front of the box to watch quali highlights.
