The LG G4.I've fancied one of these for ages, but at £300.00+ on release, forget it. I've finally picked one up dirt-cheap on eBay though, so I'm a happy bunny at last. Apparently, " sometimes the camera doesn't work properly but I took two photos this morning which were fine so I'm not sure," according to the seller. I've probably used the camera on a phone twice in all the time I've had phones with cameras, so that's not really a consideration, except I assume it brought the price down, so it's actually a positive as far as I'm concerned. If I'm going anywhere I've usually got at least my little Canon IXUS 155 with me, so I'm covered. | Some Specs
5.5-inch display 538ppi 1440 x 2560
Android 5.1 Lollipop
Hexa-Core 1.8GHz processor
32Gb internal memory
Micro-SD card slot: up to 200GB
3,000 mAh removable battery and micro SD card slot
Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with X10 LTE
HDMI SlimPort (4K)
16 MP rear camera F1.8
8 MP front camera

Great display, HDMI out should I need it, spare, easily swappable, branded, batteries, at £3.75 a go - I've just bought two - and yes, that is a leather back. It divided opinion at the time (they were also available with plastic backs) but as an old person, I think tan leather looks pretty spiffy. I'll probably pop a clear gel cover over it though. The USB charging dock I've got with the phone can take the phone AND a spare battery if one wishes. There's even a section on LG's website explaining how to unlock the LG bootloader should I wish to try updating my version of Android, or removing any bloatware. I know it's not the latest iPhone or Samsung-Galaxy-S-whatever-number-they've-got-up-to-now, and its own latest iteration is the G7 with a 6.1" display etc. (which costs between £400 and £600 new) but it'll do me for fifty quid.

Nice. I should try to get it up to a later version of Android, though. Not just for the better UI but for greater security.
I still like my LG Q6 very much.

F'ing good man.
A while back guy at my work pulled the G4 out of his pocket, without a case on it strangely, it looked like a jewel.
I'm using LG now as well, my third LG. One thing I noticed immediately about the G4 is that it still has that shape that LG was doing a few years ago, which I liked very much but is missing from the V series of LG phones. If you were to look up the Tribute 1 LG budget phone, the G4 is like the high end version of it, they look similar. Hopefully G4 is built like Tribute 1, thing was a tank.
That leather back is nice I bought one for an old Galaxy S4 I had laying around, back when we had WiFi and would just use that thing around the house, felt so comfortable in the hand.
I like the idea of getting a phone that people have moved on from just because of the break-neck pace at which Android iteration phones come out at now. You get it dirt cheap because the rat race of new over-priced devices coming out endlessly, sends the prices of earlier models plummeting into actual affordability, yet the older models are still incredibly capable sophisticated pieces of tech.
Slinger I am using LG v30, on which the camera is not great imo. But I've read that G3 and G4 had some of the best cameras LG ever made. Would love a blurb on it in time after you've used it more.

LG cameras are very good these days. I use the one on my Q6 for all my system and product shots as well as everyday photography as it's always with me.

Paul, you are a cheapskate! I prefer to think of myself as "careful," Mike. Why did that sound like it ought to have been delivered in a Scottish accent?

I do love a little bonus. Long story short, I'm going to try Jules' idea of using a power bank to feed my Raspberry Pi. I was having a look at what was available at Amazon, and on the offchance thought I'd see if there was anything in their Black whatever-day-of-the-week-it-happens-to-be sale and lo and behold a suitable power bank that also doubles as a Qi charger. I've ordered that, and from eBay, a cheap-as-chips stick-it-inside-your-phone, Qi receiver. My new/old phone will shortly be able to charge wirelessly.

Nice! I'm on the lookout for a cheap Google Pixel 2. Unlike you, this would be primerily for it's camera The rest is pretty much the same as any decent Android phone as far as I can see.. oh and it has a finger print reader and gestures, which I like..

I still have my power bank I used for the Pi lying around somewhere. Must find it and put it to use. I might even use it for its intended purpose - to charge my phone!

My daughter took over her boyfriends Google Pixel.. I tried it. Impressed.
A guy at tennis had a Pixel XL going. Mint, boxed.. I'm very impressed. General speed, 5.5" display but still fits in my long fingered hand and pocket. Camera is great. Night Sight mode is amazing. Flash? Naa led flash is just a torch now. Everything just works smoother than a more budget phone. First device I've tested where I essentially get the same download and upload speeds over wi-fi as Lan!
Reception in difficult areas is on a par with my old Windows 640 - The 640 was best in a test run by Nordic mobile network providers.. Worst was iphone6. Samsung and Haewai did not do well either..

I think my LG Q6 is at least as good as my old Microsoft 950 for reception. The test is to leave it in my centre console while making calls from the car. I get no black spots along the journey now whereas there used to be two zones where the call would drop. This is with BT/EE, O2 used to be much worse.

It's very network dependant and they are upgrading / maybe even reciprocally sharing base station resources to get rid of black spots. The only real indication is a controlled test such as the Nordic one. All phone models are of course tested in the lab and a few a quality control. It's just the minimum allowed performance is rather poor. Aside from RF design / antenna placement, case materials used and even the type of protective cover you as can have an affect.

Not cheap, but I see the LG V30 now comes with MQA capability- first phone to do so. A good sounding device by all accounts.

Yes I own it. Beware though the camera is sub par imo. But the v30+ comes with 128 gb standard which is nice.
But the sound is revolutionary for a phone because it eliminates the need to tether headphone amps to the phone (though I still sometimes for even better sound) and the battery life is excellent. Huge improvement in battery life over my previous Samsung phones.
