My first cartridge was a Goldring G800. Well no, actually it was a Shure M55E. I bought the Shure to go into my brand new SME 3009-II arm on a Connoisseur BD-1 turntable. At the same time, a friend bought a Goldring G800 for his Goldring GL-75 turntable. We experimented by swapping cartridges and it turned out that the more mellow G800 suited my system while the sharper Shure suited his. So we ended up leaving it that way. I ran that Goldring for a number of years and it served me well.

My first ever cartridge would have been some crystal thing on a Garrard or BSR turtable, far too long ago to remember. I do recall running a Shure M75ED for a while (who didn't?) and also a Nagaoka MP-10 for some time.
Then things got serious, not that long time ago actually ..........

Any Hi-Fi ? record players I had would have come with a ready fitted cartridge up until 1977 when I got a proper T/T a Leek , the cart was an AT and the cheapest in the range don't know the model number.

Can't remember what cart they fitted to my old Dual but the first one I bought separately was a Stilton bodied Nagaoka MP-10.

Mounted on a BSR McDonald MP60 my first cartridge was a Sonotone 9TAHC ceramic. No SP25 for me....far too common!

After the Goldring, I was very lucky to be given an Ultimo (what was to become Dynavector) 10 high output MC, complete with red transparent casework. I would love to still have it as I think it was better than the supporting equipment I had at the time. The SME 3009-II didn't track that well with it but it had that superb midrange quality of all MCs. It looked great, too!

Following that, and much better suited to my SME arm, was an Empire 2000E/III complete with rubbish bent steel mounting bracket. I wonder how much better it might have sounded in a more solid body? As it was, it wasn't bad at all and worked quite well in my system at the time.

Next up for me was my Nagoaka MP-50 which was their previous top of the range cart -

After the Empire I switched back to moving coil and remained with them thereafter. Having remembered how good the Ultimo was, I bought a Dynavector 20A 2. It's a seriously nice high output MC cartridge that did everything well and lasted me a long time until the stylus wore out. By then that model had been withdrawn so there was only re-tipping as a possibility and I never got it done. I still have the cartridge.

Next for me - Garrott P77i. A decent MM cart but ultimately found the rolled-off treble an issue.

My Goldring G800 was replaced with a Rega R100, which was a tickled up Supex SM-100E. Later, I bought a TT with a Linn LVX on it. That came with a Basik, but it took about twenty minutes for me to start unbolting it to get the Rega back into play. What a shock that was after the warm and fruity sounding R100! It put me off Audio Technica cartridges for life.

I'm missing something here Chris - what was the Audio Technica connection??

Take a look at a Linn Basik sat beside an AT 95. Apart from the livery and a dab of glue on the stylus assembly, it's the same thing.

Linn Basik was an AT-93 IIRC. My first cart was an AT-95. They are ridiculously good value IMO.

First cartridge was a Sonotone on a BSR in an Ultra valve record player. I then moved up to an SP25 Mk2 with a Decca Deram followed by by a Shure M55E and a Goldring G 820. Happy days.
