My Tivo has a flying lead with an RJ45. The socket next doesn't work though.
Seems a good idea to have the RJ45 plugged into a wireless dongle to connect to the interweb. Can't see anything to fit that need. Would prefer not to do it with a router if possible
What ideas please ?

You would need a WiFi repeater that also has an Ethernet socket. TP-Link do them. That would provide your Tivo with the Ethernet it needs.

I was thinking more of the plug-in type like this.

Surely that would put unwanted noise though wouldn’t it, Martin. Like those Ethernet over mains devices?

Surely that would put unwanted noise though wouldn’t it, Martin. Like those Ethernet over mains devices? Yes, that's the drawback. However, I used a similar model when I was trying to extend the wi-fi from main house to music room and it worked pretty well - when it worked!

I was thinking more of the plug-in type like this. I have one of those (looks the same anyway) With an RJ45 socket hidden underneath I had never seen before! You can just make it out in the photo Will test later today

Follow the instructions, Mike, should get you going. As well as the Ethernet for your Tivo, it will boost your wi-fi signal.

We have been using it for wifi for a while every so often for 'the other end'.
Hoping I can plug it in to the mains and plug in the Tivo. If not will look for instructions on the web. Ah. Being wifi will I need to put the password in ? Wired connections have been ok

Yes, you need to set it up for your wi-fi, including the password, so that it can act as a repeater. The ethernet socket should then just be plug-and-play.

If it's already setup, give it a try.

Before worrying about the ethernet connection, does the plug-in repeater connect to the house wi-fi and confirm that it's repeating?

Before worrying about the ethernet connection, does the plug-in repeater connect to the house wi-fi and confirm that it's repeating? The light is flashing. It may therefore be working. I need to look up to find out how it works. Whoever set it up is currently out of the country. Leaving only an innocent civilian

If it's a TP-Link I'm not sure that a flashing light is a good thing. You need to RTFM!

That's it - RE is Range Extender, meaning it's doing its job (if steady).
