As much as I like the turbocharged performance I always find the sound quality just a little too strident and aggressive on that recording.

Gosh, not for me Jules. Both performance and recording are exceptional.

Contemporary cello sonatas by Matthew Quayle. Rather good. Tonal, nothing to frighten the horses.

Yes, I agree with you, Jules, immediately noticeable that it's bright and a bit strident, and there's a deficit in the upper bass, not much in the way of thrum to the tuttis although deeper bass is present. Very strange how systems / preferences vary sonically. The performance isn't as extreme as I remember it. Although it's certainly enthusiastic! I wouldn't want it as my only recording, there are advantages to a more relaxed approach. 8/10 for the performance. 4/10 for the recording. Rick Wakeman seems to have reinspired my interest in the piece, as well as Vivaldi's music in general!

I certainly enjoy the variety in the recordings I have but I do have a preference for period instruments.

I used to love the classic Marriner/ASMF on Argo but it sounds a bit tame and syrupy to my ears now.

Agreed - was glorious in its day but can't deliver like more recent better informed recordings.

I'm sorry Jerry - didn't get very far with it as not really to my taste in T4S. Found it rather 'straight-laced' and unadventurous, it didn't give me a new experience with the music.

This new Tallis Fantasia from Pappano is hitting the mark for me. Can't wait to hear it on my system. Sublime layering of textures and tones, another keeper for this immortal work. It's a live recording from a very well received concert last year just before lockdown where they also recorded VW 6 which we all liked I believe. lso.co.uk/whats-on/alwaysplaying/read/1651-vaughan-williams-tallis-fantasia.html

I just love the younger Daniel Barenboim's way with Mozart as pianist and conductor. His partnership with the English Chamber Orchestra for EMI was sublime.
