Thank you, Jules. I got her age wrong (b.1961) and she only has a Russian-sounding name, she's actually Italo-American! Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. There are recordings but sadly her Beethoven VC is not on streaming. Here's her Mendelssohn. open.qobuz.com/track/788377

When I was younger I would not have given classical piano music the time of day, but now I find it very listenable, strange ho things change. I believe Wilhelm Kempff is recognised as one of the greatest pianists for all time, lots of feeling on this recording. A rather wonderful Faure Requiem and some irritatingly annoying Poulenc

LOL - you're not really coming around to Poulenc, are you?
I love it, his mild dissonances just work for me.

Mark Elder's previous VW is superb too.
I've got that Faure recording with Les Siecles - one of my favourite HIP ensembles for sure.

Trust me, she looked about 20 when I saw her and she was quite the stunner. Her playing was very good, too.

The folks in Dresden sure can play an inspiring bit of Elgar. Today's 3am violin concerto and this 1st symphony are truly excellent.

A magnificent, and magnificently recorded, Bruckner 5 by Sinopoli.

Take the Romantic sweep and ardour of Richard Strauss, Mahler, Zemlinsky and Scriabin... and mix them up into a huge, surging hour long bath of musical over-indulgence ... and you have the Autumn Symphony of Josef Marx.
Just don't go looking for tautness of structure or, whilst there is much that is enjoyable as it passes by, anything particularly memorable.

Sinopoli - saw him once, a good Mahlerian.

Thanks to Jules for highlighting this Bruckner mass #2 by Herreweghe. One of my favourite pieces. Released today, on my 39th wedding anniversary.
Listening now. Hmm. Very pretty, but the sense of profound mystery at the heart of the music seems to elude him.

Herreweghe's effort from 18 years ago is massively better imo.
The timings for each section tell the story. Much slower in the older recording, he just skips along happily singing tra-la-la in the new version. Wot a numpty.
