I was immensely impressed by Alison Balsom when we saw her a couple of years ago, and then again at a recent Prom. She can do no wrong!

Following a highly successful raid on a charity shop where an armful of Minty LPs were purchased .... The original Philips release of this (Can't find a stock image of the actual thing) ... 1955 Mono - but it sounds good - excellent performance - I'm baffled (but grateful) how an LP this old can still be mint. And another ... And a couple of late Beethoven piano sonatas from a real keyboard legend ... I must admit I was disappointed, selfless and self-effacing to a fault. Just a bit boring, really.

I'd expect the Previn VW to be good.

Damn right! I have the complete set on CD, but they sound thin and scrawny whereas the LPs sound magnificent - well, the two I have do! - no. 2 and 6&8. I'm keeping my eye out in charity shops for the rest of the symphonies by Previn / RCA on LP. Yesterday ... LPs Wonderful!

I notice you've been listening to a lot of vinyl, Jerry. I seem to recall you mentioning a while ago that it was not your preferred medium for classical; a change or heart, or did you just fancy these recordings? On now:

I seem to recall you mentioning a while ago that it was not your preferred medium for classical; a change or heart, or did you just fancy these recordings? A bit (well, quite a lot!) of a change of heart, initiated by a mega charity shop haul of a 100 or so genuinely Mint LPs. I sold a lot more of them off on the forums on behalf of the charity (where I do volunteer work) and had first choice for those I wanted to buy myself.
I am just so glad my turntable system didn't sell before those LPs turned up!
From a new charity shop haul (14 minty LPs) yesterday ....

Although I'm fairly format agnostic, I do marginally prefer CD for classical.

Sorry Pinch - here's some more from yesterday's listening
LP
I was so pleased to find this Shosty - I had never even heard of the recording. But sadly I have to agree with the reviewer who has posted ... "Whatever his prowess in 19th- and 20th-century Romantic music of Eastern European origin, Kertész simply does not connect with Shostakovich’s frenetic, highly strung idiom. He emphasizes the symphony’s classical structure, employing crisp phrasing and rendering the music with a strangely chilly detachment."
And the sq is rather mushy and unfocussed. Ah well, it does have its points of interest.
LP
Ahhh, that's more like it - lovely music previously unknown to me - I was particularly impressed with the Borodin piano quintet.
LP
Wow - love the Mayr piano concerto - I've never even heard of the guy before! Played it 3 times now - I want to hear the Ries as well, but the Mayr always draws me back.
Enjoyable early Saint-Saens. A fine composer.
LP
Not my fave Schubert by any means, but maybe this excellent LP is winning me over?
