Admin Special: Wolf Alice - Visions of a Life (2017) Following on from their Mercury Price 2018 success, we thought we would create an Admin special thread to acknowledge this occasion. BBC reported: 'Indie band Wolf Alice have picked up the 2018 Mercury Prize for their eclectic, enchanting second album, Visions of a Life. The London four-piece were almost lost for words as they took to the stage to accept the £25,000 prize. "It means so much to pick this up with my three best friends," said singer Ellie Rowsell. The group beat the likes of Noel Gallagher, Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen to lift the trophy. They also saw off the bookies' favourite, Nadine Shah, whose third album, Holiday Destination, explores her experiences as a second-generation immigrant, and the UK's attitudes to refugees.' Sorry, Paul. I'm not really a fan and this album hasn't changed my opinion. I must admit to being surprised that it won the Mercury because it gives me that "heard it all before" feeling. Having said that, I'm quite glad they did win, rather than one of the mainstream acts that were up for it. I haven't forgiven them for buggering about with "Wicked Game" That's the problem.

I played this today and it didn't really give me much I could connect to, I'm afraid. I'll play it again in a day or two, but for the moment it's looking like a 2 out of 5 at best.

I wanted to like this more. I quite like Don't Delete the Kisses but otherwise it's not grabbing me. 3/5.

I latched on to this album quite early having seen the Jools Holland performances of Beautifully Unconventional and Don't delete the kisses, they are real ear worms. After that Planet Hunter is a great track - bit sci-fi. The others on the album are, meh for me. I don't need to like every track and with music serving or Spotify it's easier than vinyl;) I like the mix of vocal and aggessive guitar. Helps that Ellie changes her look often too For those 3 tracks it's 10/10. Album 7/10.

Helps that Ellie changes her look often too At first I thought it was a different singer! Yes, she certainly does.

Just got around to listening and now wishing I’d left it altogether, what an absolute pile of tripe, IMO of course.
They sound like a cheap imitation of multiple other bands, just without the talent to pull it off. I genuinely can’t see how they won anything.

And here's me thinking you picked it because you liked it

No, I am the guilty one! I just thought it would be interesting to see what all the fuss was about a 'prestigious' prize winning album and whether some of us might agree with the judges. It would be interesting for us all to listen to the other albums in the shortlist to come up with the one we think should have got the prize. What do you reckon?

Definitely. I would think though that the judges and the subsequent appeal of those nominated and winning would be a somewhat younger target demographic on average than those on here though!

Ah, but it's all music, though. And I suspect that many of us own music collections, parts of which, large portions of that particular area of demography would consider really rather cool (...Daddio).
