Coming from a family that didn't have much and not having much myself to start could be the root cause. Or is it being acquisitive, a 'bargain hunter' or other ?
36 years of running my own business, working 6 and 7 day weeks with almost no holidays and putting off tidying and sorting plays a big part. Having space to store all sorts makes it too easy to accumulate.
Recently decided to become a net giver to Freecycle and so far have moved on a 30 odd year old freezer, kept for spare and not used in 8 years, a bathroom cabinet we were never going to use and a load of boxes I was keeping to organise storage. Found a few items of rubbish and binned them.
All good so far. Looking around today I find so much stuff, most of it of little or no real value. So much of it.
Trying to be philosophical and working a few items at a time. This could take years ! Perhaps it gets easier with a load gone. The garage certainly looks better.
Anyone want a load of bedroom furniture carcases, odd bits of wood and MDF ?
The boss is far from innocent too.
Think I have to change my outlook on life and become more drastic.
What has anyone else done with loads of stuff ?

What has anyone else done with loads of stuff ? I've got shot of it Mike . . . still got a bit more than is necessary, but nearly there. I had all my worldly goods in storage when I went to China, taking just 2 suitcases with me. My storage room was the equivalent of two phone boxes in size, still too much IMO. I am however very close to having everything I need and nothing that I don't - which is very liberating.
As to what I did with it all, well charity shops got most of it, sold some, gave some away and the rest went to the tip/recycling. I think twice about what I buy now, do I need it, or just want it? If it's the latter I walk away.

Part of me cannot bear to let it go. Already given and thrown things that 'could be useful'
One rationale I have applied is knowing how many years it has been there not used.
Another thought - if no one wants it on Freecycle it ain't worth a lot

Plenty people will take it Mike - charities, gumtree free section etc...just because it's no use to you doesn't make it useless. My mrs is bad for stuff...we have to have a big clear out every so often and my methodology is 1: put it online 2: take stuff to a charity shop if no1&2 fail tip it is.
Be ruthless

I think it's great if stuff goes to genuine people on Freecycle but I worry about bottom-feeders scavenging for gear they can sell on ...
We've taken lots of stuff to a local recycling centre recently. Still got heaps of toys to go to charity shops.

Another thought - if no one wants it on Freecycle it ain't worth a lot I mean no offense here, in my opinion that is a form of kidding oneself the whole "it could be useful one day". Yes it technically could be, but how often does that actually happen, and, if it's a large item that takes up space it's even worse. Plus, it feels great to rid your mind and home of so.ething you thought you needed but don't really need. My method is, when purging/downsizing time comes around and I can't part with an item I have no immediate use for, I give it one more chance. If by the next purge I havent used it or thought about I then know I'm kidding myself and I toss it out. Get rid of it. It's not only clutter in your house it's clutter in your mind.

I've been very tough with myself when finally unpacking two boxes of books to go into a new bookcase.
I asked myself the simple question: would it be worth re-reading or do I want to keep it for reference? I ended up giving half of them to charity.

Needs a change of mindset for me.
Seeing how happy people from Freecycle are collecting is a good incentive
