I was expecting my vegetable steamer yesterday. 'Out for delivery' said Amazon's site. Eventually, the text was replaced by the map showing the exact position of the delivery vehicle, indicating that it was getting closer. The little dot on the map edged a bit closer until it had almost reached Sevenoaks and the display told me my parcel was only two drops away. Suddenly...
"Delivery attempted at 6:52 PM Thursday, 26 July. First delivery attempt. Another attempt will be made on the next delivery day."
They caught me in just the right mood. I emailed them and told them that, I was watching the screen, that no attempt was made to deliver my item, and that I was bloody annoyed that they were blaming me for their aborted delivery.
Four minutes to midnight (!!!) I got a reply. They were very sorry. The courier had been informed that they should deliver my item 'urgently' today, and Amazon hoped that adding a free 30 days to my Prime subscription would be a suitable apology.
So, 30 days free Prime is not going to cost them much, but the fact that they offered anything at all was both a surprising and an appreciated gesture.
The bad news is that it's now after 12:45 and my parcel is not, as yet, showing "Out For Delivery" despite the page saying it will be "Arriving today by 9PM."
We'll see.

I would not give Amazon the drippings off my nose.

I really like Amazon. On the who,e they deliver within the time frames they say, and when they don’t they are quick to resolve.

Amazon are largely excellent. The times they have made an error are diminishingly small compared with their usual service.
The measure of a company is how they deal with errors. It's good to see that they offered compensation but I'm sure you'd like the thing to be delivered, too!

I just looked at my account, which has records dating back to 1999. Since then I have placed 1,134 orders and of those I've had 2 problems. The first was not their fault - during a postal strike a David Bowie CD had a scuffed corner which you could see was worn through from the outside packaging. No doubt scuffed whilst in some mail bag that had been stuffed to the brim and moved around for a week or more awaiting delivery.
The second was an item I ordered in black and received a white one. After a phone call it was duly collected (with an apology) and replaced with the correct one within 36 hours.
I'd say that's pretty good customer service

I've got no transport so if I go into town shopping I have to factor in ten or twelve quid in cab fares (I don't 'do' buses) plus even more in train fares should I want to get into London. On top of that buying locally is more expensive nine times out of ten, so Amazon is pretty much a no-brainer for me. Very rarely have they let me down, and when I have had the odd problem it's generally been with third-party vendors, and on each occasion, I've been compensated/reimbursed with no questions asked.
I've also used Alza on occasion, and Domu; it still pays to compare prices. Domu is where I first came across their "own brand" items: the VonShef and VonHaus lines. Both are generally of decent quality at a decent price. The odd thing is, although VonHaus and VonShef are house brands you can sometimes find them cheaper at Amazon.
I know that morally I should hate Amazon and its ilk, but I literally can't afford to.

What has surprised me about Amazon is how quickly they take my word for items being damaged. Ive never lied to them but they don't even ask more than a question or two before offering me a refund and allowing me to keep the item as well.
This I believe is how any big company should do it. Just keep the customer happy even if you gotta eat it once in a while so that the customer keeps ordering in the future. I find myself comparing other companies return process to Amazon's now.

Generally no problem with Amazon and I do use them a lot, but I find their 'next day delivery' is increasingly becoming 'sometime in the next few days' and the last delivery I had was a day late because it had been sent to the wrong distribution centre (though that's probably Royal Mails fault rather than Amazon).

I was expecting my vegetable steamer yesterday. Are they creased? I bought crinkle-cut chips by mistake. I'm hoping that the steamer will soften them up enough for me to iron them straight.

Is there tomfoolery afoot? Or sarcasm either-how?
I know Brits have funny ways of doing things but ironing chips? I've got a cold. Maybe this will all make more sense to me another day?

When it starts making sense, that's when you need to start worrying. Get well soon.

It's also slang for a wetsuit, Chris, not to mention a "turd," a gay man who prefers passive partners, a racehorse whose odds are drastically cut, and stolen car. Google is so educational.

Haha. Btw, thanks for well wishes everyone.
I've always enjoyed the euphamism "roughing up the suspect" when speaking of auto-flogging one's own pelvic region.
And
"Dropping the Cosby's off at the swimming pool" when referring to one's morning constitutional.
If that last one is inappropriate for the forum I'll certainly understand it being removed although for the record I have no ill will or bad feeling towards any race.
