There's an argument for a system either either with all smps or all linear. I think issues stem from noise pumped into the mains by smps.
Smps are usually excellent at filtering said noise. Linear supplies can filter but it seems a lot depends on interwinding capacitance if a toroid is used. I get why batteries have their place.

It would have to be an exceptional PSU that would persuade me to move away from using my Powerbank for 5v USB duties ...

One of the supercap ones from John Kenny or John at Temple Audio would worth trying. I have one and the other will be here soon. You're welcome to drop by again for a listen.

I use the cheap ones for my Broadband connection and it better than using the noisy SMPS that came with the hub

The supercap ps I have obliterated my LPS (SBooster). I need to compare to my powerbank.

As John says, a cheap Chinese 12V linear PSU is easily better than the wallwart that comes with your router (but check voltage before ordering).

Mine too, and it beat batteries easily much to my surprise.

Clive, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on the John Kenny Power supply, I have been following his and others progress down this route on an Irish forum.

Hi Simon, Here's what I wrote elsewhere. I've still got make other comparisons, eg vs battery and also with it powering a Pi with a DigiOne. The following comments are with it powering a Chord Qutest. My comparison power supplies were the stock Chord SMPS and an SBooster linear PS. It's like going from a 4 cylinder engine to a refined straight 6. Everything is better. Cleaner and more pure treble, more wispy too. Individual instruments are better separated. There's better musical flow. Double bass is so "paced". In one word - "sophistication". Picking out individual aspects that have improved sort of misses the point, it's such an overall improvement with the Supercaps hence my engine analogy.

I wonder how Stan's Dorado PSU might fare if he was to make a 5v version optimised for pi / Digione use etc

I'm sure I'm not the first person to have thought of this, he's probably been asked already ...

If I remember correctly he was thinking about it. The Dorado certainly helped the seg and offered good value.

Its 8-9 years since we sent our first linear PSU for review, been building them ever since, I just dug out a review for one.LOL Gary Jamieson – 7th October 2011 Love what this has done to the sound of my system, a fundamental step up from the stock supply. See my review here: theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?p=256352#post256352Can linear supplies improve a squeezebox Touch? Absolutely.

David as a dealer you need to find a better balance in supplying information and deliberate self-promotion.

Here's the link for the Ciunas Audio supercap ps. Available of-the-shelf for 200 Euros. It comes with an smps to plug into the main ps box. As with all such power supplies you either leave them powered up all the time or wait a few minutes until full voltage is reached after powering up. www.ciunas.biz/product-page/iso-ps-ultracapacitor-power-supply

Supercaps take a long time to come on song (mine was about 200 hours of burn-in). I'd leave it running if you can.
