Phwoah
Both Heath and Robinson were here this afternoon. Nobody could find the right schematics for checking the headers were built properly. Athough the bare headers are the same on Pip 1 and Pip 2 , the layout (for some reason nobody will take responsibility for) are different. In the end, it turned out that the pin markings in the user manual were correct, but neither Owen nor I were minded to rely on that.
I had some spare black headers left so knocked one up quickly (ish - my soldering is never quick) but it was a pants fit in the socket. Didn't really work, so I decided to have a go at canibalising a spare green header (my only hope if I wanted to listen to a moving coil cartridge today). Bloody fiddly, I succeeded in completely detaching an end pin, but have bodged it back together - just. New stock of headers on order - so I will build a proper one - but we are up and running. Fortunately, on pip2 the correct header for moving magnet is no header, so it should be fine with Cagey and nodrog.
No time for a proper listen - I am so behind with work, but I realised I am taking my TT to arthur tomorrow for the holidays, so it was today or never (I might try to take a hostage while I'm down there, just in case). However, working well. If I'm honest I couldnt really here any difference from Pip 1, but I have changed so much stuff recently (new cartridge and speakers particularly) that I wasnt' well placed to judge. Apart from convenience features and bijou components and switching, there isnt much difference. The basic circuits are pretty much the same.
As is, with a very low output moving coil it just about drives the Quads to a decent level on passive mode, but really needs to be used in active mode. The real joy - the thing I had been looking forward to - was running my Beyer DT990's direct from Pip 2. In active mode it comfortably has the gain to drive them.
OMG!
That is so much what I had been looking for in a headphone amp. Happy boy. Back to work
