Hi all,
Thanks to the hospitality of an esteemed AoS mod, there will be a phonostage bakeoff taking place in Stoke. Currently confirmed as attending are Alan (Firebottle) with his Vivant phonostage, myself with my DIY "Wizard" phonostage and Macca (Martin, The Host)
We are hoping to get a Paradise phonostage owner to volunteer to attend and we are also actively looking for a NVA Phono2 (MC input) to participate.
As you can see, our aspiration is to get some of the top phonostages together in one room. If anyone has a Vida phonostage, or something of similar ilk (MF, LDA, VALAB LCR, Tron, Ray Samuels, Croft RS) And would like to attend, please get in touch. There will be a lot of photos taken so give them a clean too 😉
A date is TBC but should be before June
System will consist of a cocktail of:
Technics SP10 MK2, Tenuto Platter matt, PMAT 1010 tonearm, Kontrapunkt b cartridge into either NVA pre or Slagle AVC into either NVA Monos, Krell power amp or Firebottle Monos, into JM Labs speakers or Tannoys. Cables are NVA or SPOTFIRE or ...... Whatever you may wish to bring that sounds best.
This part will be confirmed on the day.

That sounds like an excellent plan, good luck with it!
Both the Vivant and the Paradise were **superb** at the ASBO - would love to hear them again in a bit more detail ...

I have a VIDA but I'd really need to wait for the date as it's over 4 hours for me to get to Stoke.

I'll be interested in the date too just in case I can make it ...

Hi both, if the Vida could make an appearance we'd be eternally grateful. All invites are subject to the hosts approval. Depending on the amount of interest, you may have to have a "horse in the race" to attend. Leave it with me and I'll try and confirm a date.

Finding a good cheap Phono stage is one of the biggest Nightmares for me, worse than finding good headphones..I truly find the majority are very over priced. me being me does not want to put the majority of my budget into paying for the Name, case, Dealers bit or what ever get eaten up before you pay for the product.

Do what most of us do, go direct to a manufacturer. Firebottle and NVA sell direct to you so no dealer fee. Others will too but their names don't spring to mind instantly. It's been a long day 😂

It rather depends on what you call cheap. To get the best performance you do have to spend a bit. The Paradise is a DIY 'project' but still costs in the region of £800 I think. I stand to be corrected.
For myself I offer performance that would cost mega bucks at retail costs, at 'cottage industry' prices.
What is you budget for a final destination phono stage out of interest?

The latest boards I was offered was £1200 if I recall correctly BUT they have meticulously matched components by a very skilled engineer in SQ.

Nick of Longdog Audio has just released a new low cost phono stage (MM) and a head amp both at £200 I think. If you join up at Audio Talk he’ll send you one out to try. Knowing Nick, these will be very good I reckon.

NVA owner Richard Dunn, is threatening to blacklist anyone who loans us or attends with an NVA Phono 2.
****Please be aware of this****
We don't want to get anyone blacklisted. PM me for further details.

Macca is a grown man who can answer his own questions. How would I react? Firstly, I'd be disappointed that I wasn't welcome and have a good look at myself to evaluate why that would be the case. Secondly, I'd try and build some bridges if the absence of my person and my equipment bothered me. Anyway, I felt it best to fore warn anyone potentially thinking of loaning or attending with NVA gear.

There are cheaper alternatives that will give excellent performance. Firebottle's OTP, NVA phono1 which are about the same money. Anything Nick Gorham makes is bound to be good too.

Yep - I'm sure one of those will be just the ticket at that price point ... Should be much better value than big 'brand' names.

So there's controversy about the bake-off and it hasn't even taken place yet! You couldn't write this stuff ...

Mate, whenever a bakeoff is being organised, there's always an element that feels wronged. Truth is, we have the word out at TAS,LH, AoS, TAF. Response has been great across the forums with some real gems of a phonostage on offer. NVA gear is welcomed by us.

Do you know if that Londog 'PH-1' comes with a power supply & importantly is the stage built on a proper Circuit board?
