Many thanks, sondale. I had a rough idea what needed doing but you've given me a few more useful pointers. I've got a bit of reading to do; I'm working with a BT Smart Hub, which is always fun.

Just to clarify my setup I have a VirginMedia Hub to which I attach my TPLink modem/router; my network hangs off the TPLink box.
This means that if I have to change supplier or hub then my network is not affected. It also gives another level of security, hopefully.

An alternative is just to allow auto-IP (DHCP) in your router and devices and use a uPnP scanner. Mine shows me everything on the network in seconds. Volumio appears together with its IP address. It's a piece of cake to access it normally or via SSH once I know that. It also makes my Pi more portable when taking it to other locations.

I use this scanner, Martin. and I've switched on "Always use this IP address:" now, on the hub. I've also switched off wireless networking in Volumio so it's only got one I.P. address to bugger up now.

That should do it, too!

Talk about a comedy of errors. I've now ended up scrapping the Digi+ clone I bought because although it was a 'clone' the manufacturer played fast and loose with the dimensions, so it didn't fit the nice new sardine can I bought for it. I've now ended up buying a pukka HiFiBerry Digi+ and it's happily singing away in its tin box. Remind me not to try and save a few quid next time. All I can say is Melody Gardot is doing an exemplary job of helping me to chill out. This system does sound nice.

Glad it came through in the end, Paul.
