Def Leppard - Yeah! (2006). Following on from the theme of Paul's choice, here is an album by my favourite group, Def Leppard which is a little different to the rest of their output. It is their first and only covers album, and as a die hard fan, I really wasn't looking forward to its release, but I was pleasantly surprised at the time, and still am. Rick Allen still amazes me with his drum work, given that he only has one arm. Yes I know he uses as specially converted electronic drum kit, but it is still impressive. When they played some of these songs live at the last show of theirs I went to, it was just excellent. Wiki:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeah!_(Def_Leppard_album) Spotify:

I never really got into the whole New Wave of British Heavy Metal thing; I still listen to the first wave. This is one of those choices I'll have to wait until my 'head is in the right place' to listen to, I think. It does look interesting though.

Oh golly gosh PaulD, can I come wait it out with you Slinger? My head's definitely not in the right place - I have Townes Van Zandt spinning right now - that's a quantum leap there . . .

Def Lep's 'breakthrough' album, Pyromania, is certainly one of my favourite metal albums of all time. But I've never really got into anything after that album, so I might struggle with this but will certainly give it a go.

That's not half bad, Paul. I skipped the first track partway through as I've never liked T Rex, but from then on in it was almost plain sailing. Waterloo Sunset, one of my favourite songs of all time, suffered from an overdose of autotune, and I thought that they tried to stick too close to some of the originals, even mimicking the vocal inflections of the singers in places, but other than those paltry moans, eight out of ten.
Trivia corner - I was wondering why they chose John Kongos's "He's Gonna Step On You Again" as all of the other tunes are more what I'd categorize as mainstream. It turns out that John Kongos programmed and played the Fairlight synth on 'Leppard's "Pyromania" for them. So, a favour for a mate is probably the answer.
That is what a music nerd does. He looks things like that up. If he doesn't already know the answer to a question nobody else is asking he finds out and then insists on telling them the answer anyway. My name is Paul, and I'm a music nerd.

Kongos: When I read the track list Paul, I asked exactly the same thing and resolved to look it up when I had finished reading the thread. So, by your own definition, neither you or I are music nerds - you're cured. That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

I like Pyromania but my favourite album is probably their follow up and by far most commercially successful, Hysteria.

Saw them in the early days I was a lot more into Diamond Head at the time as in their early days were a great live act (Unlike Slinger I grew up on NWOBHM), but they never made it. They did inspire a lot of bands however. I give this a listen at the weekend.

It's got Rock On on it, so it can't be all bad (I have the David Essex original on 7" single).

Great, you'll hopefully like at least one of the songs then

I did try to like it, but it ended up sounding like... Def Leppard covering a bunch of songs!
Not really my thing I'm afraid and I far prefer Tangerine Dream's similar effort. 5/10.
