Leak Stereo 20, as modified* using a design published in Hi-Fi World. Extraordinarily good midrange quality. *changed the biasing of the phase splitter stage to allow direct coupling from the primary stage, reduced gain and fitting the more linear ECC82 valve for the original ECC83 type. Added resistors to isolate the transformer windings from the output valve screens.

I would have tried a Stereo 20 for sure but don't think the bass grip would be what I need with the Tannoys.
Lovely looking thing though.

I think I will have to try a valve amp at some point in the future.

For more years than I care to count, there were bits arriving one week, and bits going the next. That's how I ended up owning multiples of the same thing over the years. It doesn't take wads of cash because you're just recycling the same funds. I would've kept masses of stuff if I had more space and was less bothered by clutter. Since I left the UK for good, I have kinda kicked the habit, except for the things I get sent here and the three mates storing stuff for me. Still, I'm better than I was

The Planet is a real giant killer. I have used it in many systems, some expensive, and it's always delivered. I had the later Apollo and absolutely detested it. How Rega could make both of those players is beyond me. One had musicality in spades and the other didn't seem to have any musical ability whatsoever.
It's put me right off trying any later Rega stuff. The look and feel of the products just hasn't spoken to me since Roy Gandy let go of the reins.

My mate and his son had dropped by for a visit and a listen to the system. My Oracle turntable can be seen on a shelf above record storage, at the other end of that room. fullsizeoutput_ef9 by Steve Coward, on Flickr

I haven't had Merlins, or many of the other later Royds. From memory, I've had Edens, Sapphires, Conistons, A7s and Minstrels. The only ones I didn't really get on with were Minstrels. Image height is too low and the driver is massively over-doped. My living room system has modded Minstrels with un-doped Royd drivers. They are so much better but I'm still dubious of them shittimg so low. They are OK-ish and they have a very small, impact on the room, but there are still hundreds of better speakers out there IMO.

The Merlins were superb. Sold them for a pretty crazy price to a guy in Japan though ...
