I'd be inclined to say probably not. As far as I know, they are two separate outputs, analogue and digital, and never the twain shall meet. Hey, I know what you need...another SMSL Q5 (which has a remote, of course), a spare pair of speakers, and then you could hook up a subwoofer too. hmmm - that won't be happening any time soon! I've actually bought one of those 5 quid DACs from China but it will be a deal-breaker if I can't control volume by remote control - my DAC-less SMSL amp doesn't have a remote.

There is, as they say, only one way to find out for certain I'm afraid, Jules. Joking (and subwoofers) apart though, It might be worth giving consideration to a Q5, and you must have a decent pair of bookshelf speakers knocking about somewhere, that could sit either side of the TV perhaps? Don't forget, by the way, that without anything in the headphone socket on the TV you won't be cutting the actual telly sound out, and you will (trust me on this) end up with a very weird echo effect. It took me a few minutes to realise what was causing it when I initially set my "home cinema" stuff up.

I think we're talking slightly at cross-purposes Paul. I've got it set up as follows at the moment - TV headphone out to RCA input on SMSL to Denon speakers, positioned either side of TV as you say. I have a setting that allows me to bypass TV speakers completely. I'm just interested to find out whether digital audio from the TV will be a worthwhile improvement over my analogue set-up which is why I bought the cheap DAC ...

Aaaah, I see. Again, only one way to know for sure though, unless anyone here has the same model of TV as you and has done something similar. I still think you should just get another Q5 though.

My TV's optical output is not remote volume controlled, so I'd say 'no'.

Tbh, when a good Blu-ray movie is output via a decent AV amp with discreet channels in HD Audio then it's like going from 1950s mono to the hifi we know and love today. It's the only way to really enjoy a film, it is actually like being at the cinema, just cheaper pix'n'mix and beer.
