Four very different versions of Lilac Wine. Which do you prefer
First up is Nina Simone A sparse but reflective version
Next up is Vinegar Joe version This is very much a copy of the orginal
Next up is Jeff Buckley which is more emotive
Last up is a cross somewhere between Nina and Jeff: Miley Cyrus

I couldn't get any of those to play directly so went to MacTubes and tried them from YouTube. None of them would play from there either, the message I get means that they have been blocked for copyright reasons!! Anyway, as it 'appens guvnor, I have three out of the three and the fourth one out of the three is Miley so I think we can ignore that Almost too close to call as I love just about everything Nina Simone does but....its Geoff

I voted Nina, just preferred her version to Geoff's. The other two were shite.

Nina for me - Never did like Jeff, his old man "Tim Buckley" now he could bloody sing.

The best two arrangements and vocals aren't the popular ones IMO. Simone was great with the right material but she murders this and Jeff Buckley's approach to singing was always overrated (elevated to sainthood due to tragic death) Agree not a patch on Tim. Just don't find him that great. Miley Cyrus is a strong candidate here if you put your prejudices aside and forget about her image. Favourite for me has got to be Elkie Brooks - first version I heard and still the best IMO - she isn't fashionable but at least she's alive and kicking.

Nina for me. There's a slight 'staginess' which - Kurt Weill -ish - I think contributes to the impact.
Elkie Brooks - probably the first version I heard of this (maybe not)
Tim Buckley - interesting
Miley Cyrus - X factor contestant. And the band didn't seem to know what to do with that bridge between the intro and the chorus.

I adore Nina but her diction on this is odd, as is Eartha's. Jeff is good but Elkie is even better.
I can't say much good about Miley as she wasn't swinging naked off a ball so what's to like?

Jeff for me. And I liked him before he died.

What . . . no Miley Cyrus fans Jeff for me, with Nina a close second, you can keep the others - I walked out of an Elkie Brooks gig a couple of years ago back, very disappointing and a shockingly loose band.

... very disappointing and a shockingly lose band. This worm keeps on turning; it's the flip side of folks loosing things, when they are in fact losing things. Do you mean loose, Tim, as in not at all together? I think that's what you mean, but I'm not sure about it.

Taken in good stead I really don't get a kick about correcting things, it's just that sometimes it's really hard to work out what the hell somebody is trying to say ....

You should have stood your ground Tim. Surely it's an acronym for something?!
