There is a puzzle doing the rounds on Facebook. I quickly solved it and explained it to Sue (who doesn't like numbers) Then my 22 year old son, who I rescued from expulsion for school because he was forecast straight fails at A level, corrected me -using my own exam technique - RTFQ Walking the dog just now, I had another thought, applied the principle myself, and corrected him Anyone like to have a go at the puzzle and see who can beat the youth? puzzle by richard sutton, on Flickr

If think the "twist" is the X where we would have expected a plus sign. Otherwise pretty easy

The final shape is not the same as previous occurrences, which bothers me. Otherwise, as Andrew said, it's the X multiplier.

Since we are all being coy - the main error made on facebook is not to know BIDMAS as my son calls it (I knew it as PEDMAS, parentheses, exponents, division, multiplication, addition subtraction) as the arithmetic order of operations
I therefore came up with 67
workings
3 shapes =45 shape =15 next line a banana is 4 clock is 3
banana times shape gives 60 plus a banana plus a clock gives 67
I published a smug "67"
My son corrected it to "66"
I have since corrected that

Everyone applying their own arbitrary numerical value to each of the colours in the composite shapes would make it unsolvable, or at least give it many solutions.

I can see how you got 67, but that would assume the final shape is the same as the earlier ones which equal 15. As it's missing it's central square, it can't be 15. I can't see 66 unless the missing square is the factor. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

Ok There are a few of these. Usually they involve a progression or pedmas as the "tricky bit" but they are all algebra and all use variables. My wife who would freeze at being asked to solve 2a+3b can add bananas to clocks like the best of them. Tim said to me "the clocks in the 3rd line are 3 but in the 4th line it's 2" 66

If we're going to assume that the number on the clock is the number we're to use, surely the number of bananas per bunch and the number of sides on the shapes need to be taken into account, all of which are different on the last line... I therefore make it 38
