I love guitar based music, dynamics are usually part of thisI think it's why you like drums too, John. Yes but I tend to like drummers that can play time changes and complex rhythms. Straight 4/4 rarely does it for me

That's why the percussion in recordings like the Brahem albums are so good.

Can't say I actively look for anything, in particular. Perhaps I'm just a lazy git. There just has to be some connection.
Melody, an engaging female voice, tempo changes, well recorded drums with decaying cymbal sounds and, a sense of drive and energy, are some aspects that appeal.
99% of the time, lyrics have no real bearing. But then something like Don McLean's Vincent, can provide quite an emotional response. The vocal delivery and lyrics of this, make it, for me, probably the best pop song there is likely to be. It's been covered by many, but none can compare with GM's:

Listening recently (again) to The Record Producers, George Martin.
His idea to put strings on it

Quite like Les Chadwick's bass lines. It's Gerry M's vocals though that have made it the Classic it is. Speaking of vocals, the one that stands out for me is, Tony Bennett. There is just something in his voice that's hard to define. Numerous others of course like Scott Walker, Randy Newman, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Colin Blunstone. Cannot forget Steve Winwood. And a Tom-o Classic takes some beating.

Hard to describe indeed.
So far the best I've description I've come up with about what I look for in music is when there is a "spectacle" caused by any instrument during the song.
I mean when when the musician found a timbre(?) Or tonal quality for a sound or group of sounds so striking or pleasing or unique that you go back often just to hear again how that particular thing sounded or that one moment played out.
Maybe this is all very shallow, to literally just be looking for tonal qualities instead of meaning lol. I don't know.
I also look for groups that are able to create a thick atmosphere using only classic instruments, instead of a lot of synths.
Poor example here of using only natural instruments, I believe there is a lot of pedals and effects involved, but to me this is fascinating not only in the sounds created here but also for its brooding atmosphere. This one is Part I. Part IV is great to me.

Here's an example of something outside of any normal genre. Acoustic instruments playing European folk-based melodies. Fantastic musicianship and definitely sounds 'bigger' than the constituent parts. Is it classical? Doesn't matter, the whole album is so compelling that I just keep listening to it.

What do I look for in music? I am honestly not sure, I used to look for more or less anything as I had such a vast interest in different genres and types of music, although that seems to have changed a little as I have aged. I need something to keep me entertained, I struggle with ability to concentrate and therefore anything that loses my attention, I lose interest in quickly.
I really hate the majority of thrash metal, but that is because virtually everything I have heard has been someone screaming into a microphone to a series of banging and crashing coming from so called musicians, nope not for me.
I have begun to appreciate Classical more, but I do find it hard to listen to a whole album, again through attention span.
Words aren't that important to me, as I rarely listen to what they are saying, I prefer to listen to the music itself or the melody.
