Good post Slinger, clearly you're a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists! I agree 100% with pretty much all of it, apart from our dear Lana who's real name is actually Elizabeth Woolridge (bloody) Grant And if anyone is unfamiliar with the reference to KT Tunstall, this is what Slinger is referring too (I think), which put her on the map and she did it loooong before Ed Shereen. It was her first public performance of note and she had 24 hours to prepare as another artist had dropped out and it went out live. She was she tells now, totally bricking it at the time and really afraid she was going to balls it all up. So Ed, someone with more talent was doing it a decade before you old bean.

Elvis Costello. One of the most overrated singer / songwriters of all time. I avoid at all costs. I agree with that, I’m no fan.

Had a boss way back who loved Steele Dan. Never got it. Agree with most of the above.. Oh and add The Smiths. Remember him prancing on stage with daffodils hanging out of his arse

Any man who can write a song like this is alright in my book...
He also wrote "Shipbuilding" which Robert Wyatt recorded the definitive version of. I class that as one of the greatest folk songs of our age.

Costello's biggest claim to fame in my book is marrying Diana Krall.
This is my preferred version of Shipbuilding...

I remember that performance by K T Tunstall on Jools Holland. It was inspired.

I remember that performance by K T Tunstall on Jools Holland. It was inspired. Me too, she definitely nailed it. I have to admit with this thread and the 'guilty secrets' one, I'm starting to seriously question the credentials of some so called music lovers. I mean it's all very worrying!

I don't know about that, Tim. It's a fine path we tread between having what we think of as 'standards' and becoming a music snob.
I thoroughly agree with your other post about Ed Sheeran, for instance. He does nothing for me. But then I really like some of Lana De Rey's song writing and performances. Chris doesn't like keyboards much but then I love the sound of a real Hammond organ and think it often adds a little magic to a song. Mike loves what I think of as excessively jangly and jarring guitar-based music. John even more so! Jules loves classical music but also lots of metal rock (and rap) that I don't really like. Yet I love Hawkwind and Black Sabbath, for instance. Only one of which you like.
We all have overlaps and joint loves of certain performers, primarily because we're of broadly similar generations. I don't think I could look down my nose at any member of this forum, I simply enjoy the fact that we all hear different things in music. Yet, when I hear some of what teenagers listen to, it's easy to be snide and turn my nose up at the crap I'm hearing. Where do we draw the line?

At work I find a few of the team having really diverse taste and as deeply into music as much as me I even went to a stoner gig at the Underworld in Camden on Friday and good to see a mixture of old farts like myself and the younger generation all mixing together and enjoying the music. One of the biggest changes in music is the amount of small music venues There has been manufactured bands since the early 60s so nothing new there apart from how much it gets shown on TV Lots of music I do not get but also so much music to discover

I think you've taken that far too seriously Martin - I thought this I mean it's all very worrying! would have indicated it was humour? EDIT: Ooo, and I like both Black Sabbath and Hawkwind - if you were thinking about that gig, that was more to do with current the Hawkwind and the venue. I saw Hawkwind live in the 70s, the dogs danglies

Tim Said "I have to admit with this thread and the 'guilty secrets' one, I'm starting to seriously question the credentials of some so called music lovers. I mean it's all very worrying!"
I'm going to sound like the admin of another forum Tim, but with no smiley at the end of your comment above (plus I don't know you personally) its difficult to know if your being serious or whether its tongue in cheek
We're all music lovers, irrespective of what floats our boat. I'll listen to anything and if you take the last 12 months, I've discovered that I like Bob Dylan's 70/80 output, some of Jethro Tull's early work is pretty good, I prefer post Peter Gabriel Genesis and I cannot understand what the fuss is about the Fish period of Marillion... that is just the tip of the iceberg, this list of discovery could go on and on and on...
What should get on our collective goat is when somebody posts that they hate something without even listening to it and giving it a chance. But hey, that's their choice and we're fortunate that this subject of music which divides/polarises opinion is diverse enough for all of us to move onto something which brings us enjoyment... whether LP, CD or flac (other formats are available)

No Smiley? It's there or are you viewing on a mobile and it's missing?
Martin does know me personally and most of what I say to be honest can be taken with a pinch of salt - but humour is often very hard if you are not looking someone in the eye, on that I agree. I thought the general theme of both threads was a little self-deprecating, maybe I've misinterpreted that?

There's no smiley on the post I was commenting on Tim (not your last post, but two before) but hey, no big deal my friend My sentiment still stands on the bigger picture though

My personal view is that you can be a music lover even if you like the sort of rubbish that I have mentioned I have always had a pretty eclectic taste in music, although as I have got older I have noticed that that has dwindled a little over time. I clearly prefer modern music and specific genres over others now for whatever reason.
