Are the windows media player music files that you burn to a disc as good as a wav file ?. or are they a wav file ?.

The usual format for Windows Media Player is WMA which is compressed like mp3, at variable rates. Not as good as WAV.

It allows you to rip with WAV, FLAC and ALAC as well as MP3 and WMA, should you choose. Organise > Options > Rip Music > Rip Settings

Thanks, Chris. It's been a while as I always install VLC player on all my machines so I don't use Media Player.

You can convert WMA to FLAC, but wont turn it into a lossless file.

I don't use it either but it's on this laptop, so easy enough to see what's available.

Unless I have misunderstood you, I believe you are thinking it the wrong way round? If you rip a CD using WMP that's when the conversion/compression normally takes place, from the original disc into the digital audio file - CD into burner with ripping software > audio file out. If you are converting a digital audio file from your computer or a download into a playable CD (audio file in > CD out of burner), there shouldn't be any compression occurring, that is likely to have occurred already. As in the file will either be lossy or lossless. A lossless original file should convert back into a CD as perfect as the original, a lossy file can/will sound inferior, depending on the bitrate. You can create a playable CD from both formats (lossy or lossless) which will play in a standard CD player. For example a lossless file format like FLAC, ALAC or WAV can all be converted to a playable CD format as can .mp3, AAC and WMA lossy, but the quality will differ, sometimes dramatically if say you have made a CD out of a 128kbps .mp3 audio file. If it interests you, these might help? fileinfo.com/help/cd_audioen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_file_format

May I strongly suggest that you use something other than wmp to rip your cd's - you'll have much more control over the process if you use something like dbpoweramp to do the rip. As Tim suggests above, you need to rip them at the resolution you want, using a lossless format (e.g. FLAC/WAV) because no amount of reformatting later will recover the data you lose if ripping in a lossy format.

I think he's going the other way, using WMP to create CDs to play in his CD player from downloads? But yes, if ripping using dBpoweramp is a very good suggestion, especially if you are not tech savvy - EAC if you are

I can't remember the last time I burnt a CD, probably at work before I retired in 2015!
Certainly not burnt one at home in eons

Nor me. I have done a little ripping, though, because my DVD-As are so awkward to play (require viewing a menu but my Ayre doesn't have video output).

I never seem not to be ripping!!! Must buy less music.
I've set myself a goal for next year - not including another trip to Nashville and music festivals, I'm aiming for a maximum of 25 gigs and purchasing a maximum of 25 CDs. Could be tricky as I have 8 gigs booked already for 2018!

25 CDs in a year? I would blow that in the first quarter!
