Suffering a bit from a back / Gluteus medius (bum) problem. The boss suffers much the same and being keen on spending dough said we should get a new bed -- but but but this one's only about, er 20 (!) years old Vi Spring comes to mind first as this is/was the most comfortable bed I have ever had by a very long way. Probably going to go to various bed places and have a lie down or two. Any favourites from the assembled ? John Lewis might be favourite as they do Vi Spring and others

If you are happy with Vi-Spring I honestly cannot suggest anything better Mike, the king of mattresses.
I spent over £1,000 on a Tempura memory foam mattress, horrible and it went straight back after a couple of nights. It actually gave me a sore back.

The bed in our spare room. It was part of the furniture left by the previous owners. I have no idea what it is, but every single guest who has stayed, including some big whales, and 2 lots of aged parents, both with bad backs, have all made a point of saying how comfortable it is and how they have had their first full nights sleep in ages Bit of mountain air probably helps too - but the mattress gets consistent rave reviews Otherwise - the ViSpring Herald is a great mattress, if top dollar for what it is. We have an "opulence" mattress from Benson for Beds - cost "only" £1300 and is probably the most comfortable mattress I have slept on. You'll get laughed at by your kids - its a Princess and the pea thing which needs a step ladder to get in and out of - but it is very comfortable.

Choosing a bed is one of life's most difficult tasks !!
Last year we tried out several at our local department store, and chose one which felt had the right level of firm vs soft. When delivered, it was nothing like the one we'd tried, but way way too firm, so much so that after a couple of nights my back was hurting so bad we had to put back our old mattress. Eventually we gave the new one to the red cross as the store said it was exactly as ordered, would soften up after a couple of months, and wouldn't take it back!
We then went to Bensons. They claim to have a test bed (not joking) on which you lie, and it allegedly analyses the effect on your body support of soft, medium, and firm beds. I couldn't actually tell the difference between the settings, but they claimed I need a medium bed (I had previously thought I needed firm) so that what we ordered, it's wonderfully comfortable, and I've had no backaches since. Just a standard Benson bed, nothing special, about £600 I think.

Fusion mattress is my pick. My wife has been through more than a dozen due to back problems and none have come remotely close.

Memory foam is simply awful.
We bought a firm rating pocket sprung mattress from John Lewis (I think it's 2000 springs) and it has proven to be very comfortable. If it feels too firm at first, it's a good thing and you'll grow to like the support that it gives.

Does anyone rate Hypnos mattresses?
I've slept on a few and always really enjoyed them.
Our mattress is coming up for retirement soon so I've been making a note of recommendations here.

First night on new mattress last night.
Ending up buying a 100% natural Talalay Latex mattress. Great service - was delivered next day after ordering, which was especially surprising as we have a non-standard size.
I woke up this morning with considerably less stiffness in my back than usual which will hopefully contribute to my lower back rehabilitation. The top layer of the mattress is soft but underneath is very firm and supportive which is exactly what I needed.

Mike
Another "thumbs up" for Vi Spring!
We bought a Super King size Vi Spring Devonshire divan set (medium sprung my side and soft on Irene's side) five years ago.
Last month, we purchased a second Vi Spring Devonshire divan set (medium sprung) in King size, for the second guest bedroom.
Complete with an M&S Comfortably Cool mattress topper and M&S 1000 thread count bedding and you won't get a better night's sleep!
Great deals on both from Furniture Village!

Thanks Steve Still to buy. Discounts on Vispring can be huge. This one is hard. Went to And so to bed a couple of months back and he recommended Medium for both of us. Topper is certainly a must

I'm not sure it needs it Mike - the top layer is quite soft and squidgy and any more most likely wouldn't suit my back ...
