We have hardly watched TV for months now. We had a few nights recently (maybe 3 in the last 3 weeks, watching old sitcoms for an hour) However we PLAN to watch some more regular French TV. Very frustratingly - the first bit we planned to watch was France New Zealand on channel 2, and it was one of 2 channels telling us it had no satelite signal. About half the other channels had pixelation - I think the satelite got moved when we had very high winds in February this year. By the time it started (8.45 local time) it was a bit late to go to the Glacier bar (where it would definitely have been showing) - especially since I'd had a drink or two by then I was breathalysed by the French police coming back from a restaurant at a random checkpoint on a local roundabout a couple of weeks ago. I had a "zero" reading, but I have been a bit more circumspect since. The limit here is 50mg/100ml and not the 80 I was used to

TV is fine if you limit its use to what you want to watch only, and don't veg in front of it.

I'll be going 4K when we've installed a new TV but it'll be Sky Q and it'll be after we've decorated the Sitting Room, the last major room to be done. Until then I'm slumming it with HD and shitty TV sound.

Just had a frank discussion about putting the TV on for toddler when she comes to stay. She doesn't need it or miss it

It always amuses me when people "won't have a television in the house" because T.V. is rubbish. T.V. is not rubbish but SOME T.V. is rubbish. I've never caught anyone saying they won't have magazines in the house because some of them are rubbish, or they won't have books in the house because they've read some real stinkers in the past. Like most things, there is good and there is bad to be had. I often wonder if the real reason is because people once found themselves caught up in Eastenders/Emmerdale/Coronation Street or even worse - I Want To Be A Celebrity, Get Me...etc. and hadn't got the willpower to stop without ditching the telly altogether. I wouldn't be without one, like I wouldn't be without my books. It doesn't mean I read Barbara Cartland and watch The Only Way Is Essex though.

None of the above in my case Slinger, there's just nothing that interests me enough to buy one and have an ugly black screen in the room that serves no purpose. Rubbish is a subjective term, but broadcast television is predominantly aimed at the majority of the general populace, of which I don't fit into. I also abhor advertising. All those programs you list I have never watched, they have never been part of my lifestyle and never will - mindless drivel. I enjoy listening to music which I find much more rewarding. TV bores me, it's a thief of time producing (for me) nothing stimulating or of value - its really that simple. But I do go out to the movies a lot, often more than once a week and live gigs and theatre - I just don't have time for television either. I have books and magazines too, both of which give me more than television can. But hey, each to their own, I don't understand peoples desire to watch television on a daily basis, just as you probably don't understand my aversion to it

I don't differentiate between cinema and quality drama. For me, Game of Thrones (to pick just one) is every bit as rewarding as many of the films I go to see. The device for watching it is TV, thus we have one. However, I don't watch any soaps or mindless fly-on-wall celebrity shite either!
