That's interesting Paul. I'd like to hear that playing in a system. The best thing about your post is this bit though...

Today it was too hot in the workshop as the community groups servers are in a side room so it reallyt was too hot too work..... So I got on with it anyway. I got this cute Grundig vertical CD player/Cassette/Tuner all in one with the remote for £4.00 in a jumble sale. Cleaned it up, cleaned the laser and tape heads and it's fine, eBay tomorrow for £25 ish. My main project at the moment is a pair of Dynatron three way speakers. I got them when I bought a unit for the L75 in it and they came with it just and sat in the store room for ages. Out of curiosity I opened them up and found a load of classic vintage Goodman's drive units and a case with solid teak sides and ends. I also found the worst excuse for a crossover ever, no inductors and just two badly leaking caps, the things were hard wired with cheap mains flex.
I've now built proper crossovers, cleaned, rewaxed and teak oiled the cabinets and put some proper speaker terminals in. The grilles had disgusting crumbled dust behind the dirty cloth, these are now stripped these and they will be recovered and the units reassembled next week. I hope it's a bit cooler, I must have sweated off about a gallon today. Pics to follow when finished next week.

I have some really nice Stax headphones. I have the basic set up with a pair of SR 202s and the matching energiser driven by an LDA linear PSU and I have a way better SRM1 MK2 FET energiser with a pair of Lambda Signature cans. The problem was i could not find the SRN 15e extention lead to let me hear the Lamdas while sitting on the sofa. Two finally turned up on eBay at the same time and I made an offer of £55 which was accepted for a brand new one which was not in a sealed packet. I can now listen to my Lambdas in comfort

Good day in the workshop today, working on the latest L75. So far bearing stripped and cleaned, new thrust pad and grade 10 chrome steel ball fitted. Motor stripped cleaned and lubed. Chassis cleaned and polished and the whole thing put in a custom plinth from Plinthology, the new name for Carl Ellis' Handmade plinths. The arm has been stripped, V blocks replaced with "Desmo" ones, Horizontal bearing cleaned and re-lubed. One slight problem is that someone had a go at the arm in the past a broke the earth lead to the arm tube. Just ordered some miniature self tappers so I can re-connect it. I will be giving the platter a polish, fitting a Tonar headshell and a Stasis Corporation cork mat. This will be available at the Audio Jumble.

Carl is a member here. He made a plinth for my G99 about 4 years ago. It was his first G99 and he did a very nice job with it.

Hi Paul What is your impression of the L75, I've got 2 of them one is a Swiss import around 1971 the other a Goldring a bit later with a slightly different stepped plinth. Both are completely stock apart from cartridges however the Swiss one has no earth wire, it still had the Euro 2 pin plug when I got hold of it. Replaced the VEE blocks in the swiss one but snapped one of the tonearm cables replacing it back in the chassis, now need to learn how to solder!!. I have to say just listening to them in standard form I find them very musical and quite laid back, I have an Ariston RD11e which is very similar sounding without quite the bass you get from an Idler TT. I also have a Sony PS-4750 which was a bargain a few years back and being DD is very convenient for the other half to use, however I find the sound to be typical Sony mid-range - very clean and surgical (if that's an expression), I don't stop what I'm doing to listen to a piece of music because it's grabbed me. Anyway back to my point, I see you have replaced the bearing and put the chassis in a new plinth, does this make a real difference? I've read on the Lencoheaven site that reversing the grommet on the eye of the on/off stepper can also improve speed fluctuations. I bought my 2nd one for £30 so this will be my practice one i guess, but i really don't want to end up ruining it. Regards Stew

Putting the chassis in a heavy plinth makes a big difference. I have done just that recently with my GL75 to very good effect. The sound tightens up and sounds 'weightier'.

Works well with the GL75, I've just added some rubber feet to the Carl Ellis plinth and these act like the squash balls in the Loricraft plinths and improve the focus of the sound as well.

Finally got round to sorting the bedroom kit out, the system now is an very sweet little SMSL amp I got at the ASBO from MartinT with a LDA linear power supply from The Brookmeister This has an Aiwa DiscMan, a Leak Stereofetic and one of these little DACs from the iMac, All with three way switch box. These feed into a pair of vintage JVC die cast aluminium SM-3 bookshelf speakers. I worked on the SM-3/SM-5 project when I was at JVC and have always liked them, I also use these as the satellites on the home cinema system.

Interesting afternoon’s listening and I’ve come to a few conclusions. Listening to the current main signal chain Koetsu Rosewood signature, SME IV.V on the Art Audio Composer Solo, I really think it cannot be bettered. It’s certainly the most detailed, dynamic and musical I’ve ever had and I have had high end sources for decades. Running through the Trichord Dino with the N/C power supply into the aux input of the Art VP1 it sounds very special.
The second arm is a Jelco 750 D mounted on a pod from Speedy Steve at Magna Audio, this uses the AT MONO33 in either LP or 78 versions. Steve is now making me a second pod, this will hold my AT 1005 Mk2 with JVC Z-1s fitted with a Jico Shibata stylus, this is for playing records after cleaning to check them before they get played with the Koetsu. These high output carts go visa selector switch into the VP1’s own phono stage.
Power amps are still the Art Audio Veloce monoblocs and they will stay, as will the Tannoy/Lockwood Monitor Golds. Thing is I think I’ve got the best sound possible, the detail, depth and layering are the best I’ve heard and this includes the many pro studio monitors I’ve used. So I guess I’m done with building systems, time to get the record collection sorted. 😁😀😁

Nice outcome, Paul. What's the SME IV.V, is it a hybrid between the two? speedysteve does some good work, I still have his ebony arm board on my Technics deck.
