Sony MDS-JE520 MiniDisc player I had one of those, very nice deck indeed. I used it for making MDs for the car changer. By the way, as I remember it ATRAC is lossy but sounds better than mp3.

ATRAC is slightly lossy I’ll giant you, but compared with the best of MP3, it’s inaudible. I wish I still had a changer in the car, the Volvo has a hard drive which sounds awful and stupidly a CD drive that won’t rip to the drive. It will only rip from a usb stick.

Elsewhere on the forum is a discussion on fuses that has touched on the safety aspect of the BS 1363 fused plug system. This is touted as being "The safest plug system in the world" and is sometimes described as a "Safety plug". However, if someone leaves one on the floor it will inevitably end up with the prongs pointing upward. When Viv got up from her chair at about 1:30 AM on Wednesday night, she trod on the plug our cleaner had left on the floor. Luckily the scream woke me up and I was able to stop the bleeding and take her to hospital where they checked there were no broken bones, dressed it again and gave her a tetanus shot. She lost abour 250 CCs of blood, (She held her foot over an empty yogurt pot to stop the blood going onto our oak floor), and the bruising went right through her foot as the thing went in the full length. She now has a scar the size and shape of the earth pin, on the ball of her foot. On the other hand, the Schuko plug when left on the floor, falls with the pins pointing sideways, which makes it safer than the 13 amp BS plug in my opinion.

Doc, which model are the Yamaha power amps that you are using? Hi Jules, I have a couple of P2075s, though I’ve just had an offer on one of them. 😁. They’re old but reliable and dynamic.

New arrival time Chez Doc, a while ago I picked up a very early Trichord Dino, actually pre Mk1 production prototype. After speaking to Graham at Trichord it appears some of these were sent out to reviewers and not returned. I found i5 in a second hand shop and was going to use it for the second arm on the Composer Solo, the only difference between this and the mk1 is that the dip switches are inside. Having had a good listen, I really liked it and tried it with the Koetsu/SME, and thought it really very good albeit with the standard toroidal PSU. I figured it was worth a flutter on a power upgrade, so spoke again to Trichord and decided on their top oF the range “Never Connected” PSU, which was duly ordered and built specially for me. It arrived on Monday and has had a lot of use since then.
The first impression was one of greater extension, a fullness of sound over the standard PSU, an authority to the sound and that in itself would have been worth the upgrade. However, it got better with my attention being drawn to the complex interweaving of melody lines and the micro dynamics within the performance. On Sinatra and Basie Live at the Sands, the texture of the brass is palpable, the mute trumpet on “Making Whoopee” has the most incredible feel of a rubber mute yet on Fly me to the moon, the brass is sharp as it should be an£ the mute has obviously been replaced with an aluminium one. Throughout the whole thing Sinatra’s voice is, as it should be, like cream pouring on silk. Leonard Cohen’s “You Want it Darker” has the most incredible textures and there is an incredible feeling of melody about the sound.
Really like this this piece of kit and I think it’s going to be a keeper.

Really interesting afternoon listening to various toons, just over a year ago I bought a job lot of 150 12” records on fleabay. They turned out to stuff they had bought for pennies as clearance from charity stores. I paid the princely sum of 15 squids plus a fiver for postage. I thought that they would be mainly crap and indeed about 50 are not good enough to be turned into nut bowls. I’m working through the others and I’ve found some real gems, several Santana albums including the first pressing of the first eponymous album, Caravanserai and live with Buddy Miles. There was also Bob Seeger’s Stranger in Town, and Sade Stronger than Pride. Thing is is they looked unplayable but when given a little TLC on the Loricraft PRC they all came up as mint- or Ex++. Some of the sleeves needed regluing and washing with lighter sprit to clear of old stickers and every thing is good. The PRC is without doubt the best accessory on the planet especially when teamed with The Right One fluid. 😁

Another day, another challenge, The OPPO BDP-83 I off for a repair, service and software update, so I needed an alternative silver disc or at least CD spinner while it was away. Knowing this was happening, I went to the storage unit and pulled out this Ex-BBC Denon broadcast deck, formerly in the More Music Radio Cellar Club studio and swapped the two units. I have to confess I had forgotten what a fabulous sounding deck this is, although limited to Red Book CD's. I'm now kind of wondering about keeping it in the system, but I'm limited for rack space. I will have to wait until the OPPO is back and compare their respective quality with CDs. "although limited to Red Book CD's. " Can you explain what this are to the uninitiated - Thanks

Red Book is the set of standards for audio CDs. Anything with the 'Compact Disc' logo should play. Yellow Book is the standards for CD-ROM. Orange Book is the standards for recordable CD-R.

Answered without moving my lips To be fair, the Denon DN650F will play some Orange book recordables, but not all. Anyway it's now in somebody's studio and the standby CD players are an Orelle CD10-T transport and DAC and a Mission DAD/DAC5 combo, though the OPPO BDP is the main silver disc source.

Been spending a bit of time restoring a Gerrard 401, this will now be the number two TT on my system. The holes that are now blanked off were for levelling and the one in the word Garrard are were a stop go switch was installed by BBC engineers. I was originally going to fit an SME 3009, but I haven't finished it yet. The Audio Technica AT 1005 - 2 is a better arm in my opinion anyway. I will be brining this to the ASBO 😉

A nice little purchase from a bloke on Schpock, ai made a low ball offer and had it accepted. It comes complete with an Ortofon FF15 with a decent original stylus. The deck needs a clean, but is otherwise perfect and should come up like new. Part of the JVC line up I worked on back in the day, this will show any entry level deck under about £600.00 a clean pair of heels. It's Quartz Locked DD motor has no audible cogging and has a decent amount of torque and the OEM arm, made by AT works well with the Ortofon, though I will try it with a Shure or two or possibly an ADC. Once fully serviced, it will be up for sale.

Same quality main bearing as the TT71 and the control circuits of the QL-Y5F. The auto mechanism, unlike say the Technics 1200 has the gear that drives it on the spindle not inside the bearing housing, needing a cut out, which prevents the lubricant being retained. The Technics 1200 bearing is a one size fits all compromise which doesn't fit anything very well, hence the number of after market bearings for it. If I haven't sold it and it's fully fettled, I'll bring it to the next bake off
