I've pretty much ignored headphones my entire life thanks to early negative experiences in the 1980s with expensive Sennheisers. I'm now enjoying headphone listening immensely thanks to Grado headphones and my Schiit Asgard 2.
The thing is, I'd like a longer lead and I don't want to mess with my RS2e phones. That meant buying an extension lead. I picked up a cheap but well made Van Damme one second hand. It degrades the sound just enough to make me not want to use it. Given my inexperience with phones, im hoping to get some sound advice which will stop me chasing my tail. Can anyone advise in the following respects:
1: the Van Damme lead has decent connectors and is 10 meters long. Would shortening it to 3 or 4 meters make a positive audible difference?
2. Would I be better off making my own from, say, Klotz AC110.
3. Is there a better (than AC10) raw headphone cable I could use? I'm not wanting to pay megabucks because AC110 has been as good as anything except NVA TIS.
4. Is there an affordable ready-made cable that would offer no audible degradation and be likely to better my own DIY attempts?
5. Finally, I also have some Grado SR80i and SR60i. Their cable isn't in the same league as the RS2e and after hearing the degradation from using the Van Damme, I'm thinking I could upgrade both by replacing the supplied cable with AC110 or w.h.y.
If if I rewire the cheaper Grados, the Y splitter plastic housing is too small to take anything of decent thickness, can you buy these joints or is there another solution?
Is rewiring headphones an easy job or could I wreck the headphones if the iron is too hot or I apply heat for too long? I've never dismantled phones so I have no idea what the cable is soldered to. If it's as delicate as soldering in a tweeter, I might pass. I've done that many times before but I'm averse to risk these days.
apologies for so many questions but I am a headphone novice and don't really know where to start.
