I moan about young lads and their loud exhausts, but I was just as bad.
850 mini with a Mk1 AH Sprite silencer sounds nice, recommended by Clive Trickey from Car and Car Conversions magazine. Following on I got into rallying, and the mini grew to 998 and then 1300 acquiring all the go faster bits including the straight cut gearbox and a limited slip diff. My biggest event was the Fram/Castrol international Welsh rally which I managed to finish.
That was eventually sold and replaced with a Sunbeam Tiger (260cu in / 4261cc Ford V8), that started my love for the V8 engine.

I finally got around to doing some performance measurements on my car this morning as I have a new app for the phone and the roads are extremely quiet at 05:30.
BMW 335d M-Sport Coupe (2008) with DPF removed, Ecotune Sports Cat, Ecotune remap, swirl flaps removed. 376bhp, 740nm.
0-60: 4.2s 30-50: 2.0s 50-70: 1.9s
Not bad for a diesel!

My 6.5ltr V-8 diesel Chevrolet ex ambulance was nowhere near that quick.
The quickest thing it did was drink diesel.
The thing is, if you have the power of Martins car how often can one use it all on these roads of ours ?
My Volvo is (supposedly) 164 bhp, and that's more than enough for the majority of the time.

Not often, but it's nice having it. I have no problem admitting that I enjoy driving when the roads are clear.

That's a pretty quick 0-60 time, especially for a 2000kg car.

It's still a bit of a lardy wagon though. I'll stick with my 515kg for performance fun.

I have grown to love large slabs of torque. Any time I drive a petrol car now it feels pretty gutless (admittedly, these are rental cars).

I meant to say 'non-turbo petrol' but you knew what I meant.

At one time I had one of the first RHD Audi Quattro's, the proper one with the arches. What a machine that was.
I have vivid memories of powering round damp roundabouts with the tail hanging out a bit, man did that thing go round corners fast. It was an orange shade of red and I loved it.
After that came my Saab 9000 turbo.

I meant to say 'non-turbo petrol' but you knew what I meant. Oh yes. Hadn't made the connection Diesels have more torque don't they ?

Yes, within a narrower rev band.

One of my pet projects from a couple of years ago. A late vintage 2007 W203 C320 Cdi, I prefer the Mercedes with the 'eyes' rather than the new models just my preference. The car was just very clean, well looked after a low mileage when I purchased it back in 2010. Like Martin I prefer big diesels now, the effortless overtaking and quite frankly amazing MPG's that these things can deliver are additive. I took a slightly different route to upgrading than Martin did with his Beammer. Power now comes from a V8 420Cdi motor which I sourced in Europe, rebuilt the unit to a 4.6 version, increased to two turbos from one (which was a tricky operation and then some), bespoke exhaust system. Custom engine management system, new trick intercooler. The standard 7G tronic box can only handle around 560lbs of torque, so had to be completely rebuilt (twice lol) and a slipper installed. After around 6 months of blood sweat and tears the net result was 688bhp @ the rear wheels and torque in excess of 840lbs/feet the rolling road we used had a problem actually measuring the power as the we managed to almost boil the water in the cooling tanks that feed the rollers with braking force. They mentioned they had never had a car with so more torque before and simply could not measure it satisfactorily I really do not know what the 0-100 times are, though the in gear times are where it matters. Having made a few interesting encounters, the 50-150 times are more than match for a GT3, Gallardo, Aston Vantage. On a run keeping strictly with the 10% limit on UK motorway speed, it regularly returns around 38Mpg, in London traffic closer to 29Mpg so not bad on the scheme of things. The suspension and brakes have also been made to match the car's performance as well. The looks have been deliberately kept low key to retain the image of the original car. (though I find M3 drivers enjoyable sport) It still retains a great deal of the Mercedes ride quality and even the good lady enjoys driving it. Daily drive is B200 Cdi which has also been introduced to change lol
