Found one of these in the spares box. Must have come off an old deck I bought as a project. It needs a new stylus, is it worth spending 60 odd quid on a new stylus? Never heard one of these, but i dont like warm and fuzzy carts

60 quid?? No chance.
A good enough budget cart back in the day but definitely on the warm side, not much in way of treble. I don't think you will like it!

Spend the money on an Ortofon 2M Red or a Grado Prestige Black and you'll have more get up 'n go.

Sod that then, i'll just bin it. I'll get another audio technica at-f7 and continue to use the shure m97xe as the spare. Might look at a 2m black or an at150 too Cheers ant

If you like the AT sound, I think you will prefer the AT150 to the 2M black.
I have had both. I kept the AT150.

Well I bit the bullet and went with an audio technica at-150 sa. the 2m black was too rich for me when you consider that for not a great deal more I could have got a hana mc with a shibata stylus.
I got the at150 for a bargain price on ebay, much less than I was prepared to pay for one, so I bought a couple of lps aswell

Let us know what you think of it. Have you had it long enough to form a proper opinion yet?

Havent got it yet. I'll be comparing it to my at-f7 mc and the shure m97xe.
Part of the reason for choosing it was that I like the at-f7 alot, and am quite fond of the at440mla. Tbh i couldn't stand the older at carts, i thought the at95 and at oc 7 and 9 and the old 'even number' at-f range were bleedin awful. The 440 and f7 changed that.
I almost got a rondo red but was put off it by the fact that the only ortofon carts ive ever liked were the original red bodied mc10, the original sl15 ( the one that had the little beak on the front) and the kontrapunkt b, and the fact that ive found all the other ortofon carts ive tried as abit dull and not very dynamic. And that includes the rondo blue and mc25. Never been entirely happy with ortofons as a rule. Another I couldn't stand was a benz micro mc, that was awful, wouldn't track for shit.
Cant stand the denon dl103 either, never got the hype after trying several variations (103r, nude stock one and a zu bodied one). I even built a high mass arm specifically for it but never got the magic.
Only other carts ive ever been pretty happy with were a dynavector 10x5 and I wasnt about to pay 500 quid for one, a coral 777ex which is now unobtainable and an sae1000 lt which was the same cart as the coral and is impossible to find.
As you can see, I am very very picky indeed..... Hopefully the 150 will have the qualities im looking for

I really like my AT150MLX, and was always wondering if the SA was better. The SAE1000LT is a cracking cart, and is now very difficult to find. I am glad I bought one when they were available at a decent price.

The sae 1000 lt I got nos a couple of years ago from a bloke in Canada I think. Was an absolute bargain of a cart, i was gutted when it went down on one channel.
I see William thakker over in Germany still has them at 379 euros. Tbh id rather buy one of them than a 10x5

The AT33 series carts sound better to my ears than the OC7 and OC9, with greater weight and body, and I've owned all three.

Yes, the OCs are bright, the 33s much better balanced.

I found pretty much all the at carts thin and screechy with an overly bright top end that would take your head off with the wrong recording. until I bought the f7 last year. I only got it initially for testing purposes for the lenco conversions, and the hifi world test on it said it tracked like a leech. I wanted something that tracked, and bought it off the strength of their measurements and review. On listening, it's as if they finally got the balance right on them. Same with the 440 if its put in the right arm. They work brilliantly in a mayware

Dont you feel modern cartridge are sounding worse?

Maybe not worse, I seem to like 70s carts like the coral and the dynavector, which was originally designed in the late 70s. Cant stand 80s carts or most 90s carts like the benz. I think things started to get better around 2000 ish, i like the clearaudio mms and the kontrapunkt b.
The stuff like the at440 and dynavector that were introduced in the late 70s and honed over the years, and new recent designs do it for me. Dunno why, they dont seem to have that signature 80s screech. And they track properly. Probably because they werent designed to fit with the linn naim ethos that prevailed for 20 odd years

I liked the Dynavector DV-20X2L very much, it was potent but a little dark in sound. I upgraded to a Shelter 5000 for its sheer dynamic impact and more open sound, but there is a resemblance in presentation.
