No,not what you're all thinking....
Noticed a pair of "the horn" on sale at £450. Reckon I could get the price down a bit. They're an Ed Schilling design and seem to have a bit of a following.
Anyone heard them?

They use Fostex wide band drivers, so to quote Billy Gibbons "I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole". They won't do bass very well, and they have an awful hump in the response at 7KHz, which means that your head will get sawn off with ear bleeding treble from time to time. And you won't get anything like the leading edge definition of cymbals and the like, or even bass guitars and kick drums for that matter.
I haven't heard these particular speakers, but I have heard enough Fostex drivers to have a pretty good idea as to how they'll sound. The DIY crowd love 'em, because they convince themselves that they sound better because there's no crossover, when they'd do better being honest with themselves and getting to grips with why crossover filters and multiple drivers came into being.

I can't say I agree with you regarding Fostex drivers in a small enclosure. I find the sound coherent, dynamic, detailed and compelling in the near-field when driven by a Class T amp from my PC. This is not at high volumes, mind you.

He asked about something like this www.thehornshoppe.com/I very much doubt that £450.00 buys you the 2 way setup with the Heil motion tweeters, so that leaves the single Fostex FE 126 driver in a horn. I have never got on with a solo FE 126 - it sounds very much as I described.

Chris didn't ask about Fostex drivers in a small enclosure. No, I realise that, I just felt compelled to suggest that Fostex drivers can sound good in the right enclosure and environment.

I very much like what you can do with a Fostex FE208EZ, but it needs a tweeter to pick up the load where the driver starts falling off. The falloff starts before you reach that 7KHz hump that's so obvious with many Fostex drivers. The only problem with the FE208EZ is that it needs a big box to get the best low end response. This is from Simon's blog www.atrj13.dsl.pipex.com/na-fostex_fe208es_rear_horn.htmSimon is one of the regulars at Owsten.

Interesting. It is the Fostex drivers - the improved ones apparently. There's a pair of Frugal 3s for the same price as well.
Might just go get a listen to them but tbh I can't see it as I'm poor again but see how it goes...

I very much like what you can do with a Fostex FE208EZ These here Fostex FF125K 5" drivers sound fine in a small reflex cabinet. Yes, there is a peak at around 7kHz but it's quite well disguised.

Yeah it will Chris - I would also try and sell my Mission 752s and Tannoy Mercurys and put that towards them. Guys happy for me to split the payments as well. MOT is due on the car though.
Have to think about it.

Bought them. Sold my Missions and then paid £350 for the horns and I quite like them. I've got them hooked up to my KT88s just now and they're lovely. Very natural and they seem nice and quick too. They're right in the corners of the room and the bass isn't overpowering by any means but does carry a bit weight. Got a feeling these are going to grow on me.
