One of the outstanding albums of all time.
Mavis Staples on lead vocals
Ry Cooder Guitar and producer
Ladysmith Black Mambazo - background vocals, amongst others *
I was taken as soon as I heard it. Picked up on my broad search for albums with "Ry Cooder" in the mix somewhere. One of his best guitar outings and one of his best ever productions.
From the very beginning with J. B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" you know something special is going on.**
Eyes on the Prize - track 2 is one of my few test tracks for kit upgrading and oh how it reveals more with more upgrades.

The album theme is the civil rights struggles of the early '60s which Mavis was part of with The Staples led by her dad Pops Staples, her two sisters and brother. Very bluesy with some gospel sounds. Mavis was locked up a few times herself so she has authority. Seems strange this happened in our lot of our lifetimes. Mavis also draws a parallel to the mess in New Orleans - "still happening". Discogs says "Funk/ Soul". Maybe a bit...
*Full list of musicians

The 'live' version of this, well many of these tracks is well worth having
Live hope at the Hideout
Rick Holmstrom doing a great job on guitar
Female vocal ? This is a *woman*. In fine voice, 69 when she made this.
Give it a spin then go and buy it
** Nice version from Terry Evans of this on Puttin' it down as well
