Rilling has recorded it three times apparently - 1977, 1988 and 1999.

I'd like to hear the Drottningholm Bach Mass. As for JEG, I mostly like his recordings but a couple fall flat for me. I shall find the Rilling on Spotify and have a listen. I don't think that Rilling's original CBS recording is on Spotify, sadly. He did a later recording, though, which is also very fine. Here's the Drotty ...

Ooh yes, I am liking the Drottningholm very much. Now to find the Rilling and decide on one to buy.
Discovered I have the Giulini on CD.

It turns out I have the JEG Bach Mass too, just out of order on the shelf! Listening to it, it has the typical ultra-precise playing and sense of order to it that is his style, but I do think it rather suits Bach. Listening to the Guilini is like going back in time - bigger, more diffuse, richer but I'm not sure he communicates Bach adequately. He romanticises it too much.
On balance, I prefer the JEG. I have still to listen to the Rilling.

I've turned instead to the JEG reading of the St Matthew Passion. Utterly sublime, the most perfect performance of an awesome choral piece.

JEG and Giulini - you are comparing two extremes there, you know! Lots of middle ground.
I find Giulini unbearably turgid in Bach (and too damn slow in most music).
