When I switched my optical cables to Stan Beresford's I also found an improvement in sound quality over the generic ones I had before. His are equally well made and I can well believe the jitter theory as optical fibre is prone to group delay artefacts. No night & day nonsense, but an audible improvement in air, space and image focus. That is exactly what I'm hearing Martin, however this wasn't subtle, and for the cynics amongst us, our kids, who aren't prone to offeing opinions on such matters, commented today on how good things were sounding, and they weren't even aware I'd installed a different Toslink cable.

That's a bit bristley Dave. I hear differences in cables too, but never one that has had such a profound effect as to make my jaw drop. That's all I'm saying - you seem to be reading more into my words. You touched a nerve with your comment Chris which, with respect, came over as rather condescending. It's a subject I intend to expand upon in the 'Why do people leave forums' thread a little later on. There's a certain well known group of internet trolls who are probably busy lording it up over my alleged 'shilling' of said cable. Just to clarify (not that I should need to), this is the first Audioquest product I've purchased, and on the basis of what my ears are telling me, it won't be the last. The solution to shilling = keep it secret/keep it safe... Don't tell anyone and then observe as a perfectly decent product (or in extremis, business) goes down the tubes due to lack of interest...

At that price, it's worth a try. Shame about the colours though!

Ultimately it's behind the system so no one sees it anyway.
Nothing new to report really other than that the system is now connected via a full loom of NVA Super Soundcords, which is somewhat ironic. Ive messed about with all sorts of IC's in this system and yet i keep coming back to the SSC's, they just sound 'right' to me in this context.
Oh I nearly forgot, I have decided that the Trio will be going as soon as I find a buyer. I cant afford to give it the attention it needs and deserves, plus the missus had a little mishap last month and managed to snap the power switch off it. No doubt there's a resourceful bugger out there who can source a replacement, however the entire affair has rather spoiled things for me. If anyone here is interested then PM me a sensible offer and I will consider it. I can ship it or else you could come pick it up, s'up to you.

Thought I'd tentatively dip a toe back into the water seeing as I have implemented a small change to the system recently. I've gone and bought myself a modified Little Dot mkII headphone amp, which has usurped the BTE for pre-amp duties. Those who know how highly I rate the BTE will, no doubt, draw their own conclusions

Hello Chris. So so buddy, so so - not been the best of times recently, but keeping my chin up never-the-less. I'm really rather impressed with the Little Dot, it has introduced a lovely, airy realism into the equation. Seeing as the BTE is simply a volume control, a source selector and a few short runs of copper wire, it would seem that placing 'more' components in the signal path can improve things, but then what do I know. Sounds bloody good to me...

Welcome back, Dave, I wondered where you'd gone.
What's your long term experience with the SSCs?

Put it this way Martin they are still in the system, I really like them.
I have to say the Little Dot has brought a level of dynamic control to the system that I never thought possible, and I take my hat off to Quad. The little 306 power amp has been with me for nearly three years now and despite several upgrades to the system during this period it continues to raise its game, that is one acquisition I will never regret.

Some quite exotic pre-amps have passed through my hands, including a factory modified and upgraded Passé Audio DR5, and yet nothing has driven this Quad 306 with quite the authority and delicacy as this Little Dot mk2 achieves. It truly is a little marvel and as of this morning it got even better after I installed a pair of NOS Mullard M8100/6AK5 drivers. This is absolutely remarkable...

I've been busy valve rolling since my last post and have settled on a combination of nos JAN GE 5654W's and nos Russian 6N6P's with an OTK stamp, if that means ought to anyone. I am not going to wax lyrical because I really don't fell the need to, suffice it to say that I am absolutely delighted I spent a little time doing some research...

So sorry, Dave, I did not know you had suffered a tragedy and hadn't meant to sound flippant. My condolences to you.

Having little disposable income really focuses the mind towards what is actually important in life. I class myself as being lucky because my modest little system really does sound quite pleasant, not that I don't do a little online window shopping from time to time, mind you, but I'm generally happy with my lot these days, I am currently nursing an itchy trigger finger however. Last time I looked on NVA's eBay store I noticed a used pair of their wee 40w mono-blocks for sale, I really would like to audition those.
