I'm trying!
Don't seem to have fallen out with anyone yet and I've appreciated the more technically minded posts. Very handy and hopefully members will continue to share their knowledge.
Loads of Scots as well so that's good!

Loads of Scots as well so that's good! Unless you all leave us and float off into the North Sea ! I'm already in the North Atlantic mate! Roughly 80 miles NW of Shetland. No you all can't have Mull. Or Iona. In fact the entire West Coast is mine. If bloody only!! For you island lovers(another wee hobby of mine) the definitive account is Hamish Haswell Smiths book simply entitled The Scottish Islands. Superb. He's also done one called An Island Odyssey which is good as well and a bit lighter going. I utterly adore some of these places and have done well to get to quite a few of them - glad to hear other forum members like them also.

Its a pity I'm not that keen on Mendelssohn as Fingal's Cave is an amazing place. Would love to go back but it doesn't look likely any time soon.

I worry that should Scotland detach itself and float out into the Atlantic, with all that weight gone from one end of the island, the south coast of England will disappear underwater...

London will be ok, uncle Boris will hand out free scuba kits to all the city gents, with special water proof tied on bowler hats. Of course everyone else will just have to sink or swim. Tube trains will be adapted to being submarines no problem.

Quote "I think we've had quite enough discussion of these devices in different threads now " Does that mean that there is a pre-determined limit for discussion on all items ?

Nodrog - Couldn't agree more. Staffa is just unbelievable, totally unique. Typical that we lost our photos from there. I really like Mull and found Duart Castle and the entire history of the island fascinating. There's a waterfall you can walk behind but I'd be toiling to find it again. Glad you enjoyed your time in Scotland.
julesd - Iona is stunning as well. A pal stayed there, and whilst some interesting people come and go he found it a bit uptight for him.
The story of Mingulay may appeal to you both - bit of a dream destination for me. The small chain from Barra down is known as The Bishops Isles and has big, dangerous canoe adventure written all over them.
Never did get there when I had my inflatable - the logistics and timing never worked out. Shame that.

He may be a twot but strange character and being different sells, why else would Big Brother exist. The art is to get top advisors who actually know what they are talking about and don't step outside your brief. He is becoming good at that.

He may be a twot but strange character and being different sells, why else would Big Brother exist. The art is to get top advisors who actually know what they are talking about and don't step outside your brief. He is becoming good at that.He is indeed....too good. I have a particular axe to grind with our Boris however, I grew up in the area of Kent where he wants to locate his damned airport and I'm not happy about it. Okay, I don't live there anymore but I know the area well and understand full well the damage the development will cause to the local communities and environment. Basically three, and possibly four, communities will cease to exist if the airport is built: Allhallows-On-Sea, Lower Stoke (both villages I've lived in), Grain, and maybe Upper Stoke too. That is a lot of memories to lose in one fell swoop but it will be far worse for those residents still living there who will need to be relocated.
As well as these more immediate issues the area has strong ties, historically, to royalty. Allhallows was one of Queen Victoria's favourite bolt-holes where she would sometimes go to relax with Prince Albert, the advantage being it was reasonably close to London should she need to return in a hurry to attend to affairs of state. To facilitate this a railway spur was built which ran from Northfleet, across the Northern section of the Hoo Peninsula and on to Allhallows to carry the royal train. In time a large hotel and inn sprang up around the rather pretty station and sidings. I remember the station buildings well as they housed a small bakery when I lived there in the 1970's. Sadly it has since been pulled down. The hotel and inn are still there though. The hotel is now a rather shabby looking collection of flats and the inn, The British Pilot, is still trading as far as I am aware. Both buildings are quite impressive pieces of Victorian architecture which dominate that part of the village.
Then there is the wildlife to consider. The area plays host to millions of shore living bird species, some of which are rare.
