You been on the lash tonight, David?

Heh, heh, you'll have to ask Nick to make you some cheaper amps!
Buying a barn that's not had love for a long time is akin to owning a boat. I don't foresee having spare wonga for a long, long time.

Oh yes the DNM's interesting plastic amplifiers with an even more interesting speaker terminals!
Have repaired a few in my time (not the easiest task I might add!)

I used to subscribe but stopped it in a moment of cost reduction. You're referring to a Vol.11 No.1 article titled 'Heresy'? I may re-subscribe because many of their articles are well written and I used to enjoy reading it. I am the same in that I used to subscribe (from #1 in fact) but in a moment of ennui I cancelled. As happenstance would have it I reinstated my subscription earlier today (though if had known that RD had any input I probably wouldn't have).

My Dad's a subscriber, I've had a look at a few which were ok, but they're very Naim centric.

I stopped buying mags about 10 years ago after I got into DIY stuff. Doing it meself seriously de-bunked the mystery surrounding all things hifi and I realised that there wasn't really any mystique and it was all in my mind. I sometimes flick through a mag or two in a well known stationery retailer and I get so frustrated that there is rarely any information about the internals of kit reviewed. I have built many amplifiers and I know that (despite all amplifiers are said to sound the same) that they don't and it depends on the internals, power supplies etc. IMO the best and sadly missed mag was Audiophile which gave good internal shots, information about e.g the transistors used in an amp, DAC chips, power supplies (Class A, Class A/B etc) and even articles on how to make them better. The prices of new stuff these days seems ludicrous. Is there any such thing as "Budget" hifi anymore? I wouldn't spend £3,000 on an amp on the strength of a review and short"dem" in an unfamiliar room.

I used to regard hifi shops as having a sort of mystique about them. You read about all the stuff (especially What HIfi Awards) and desperately wanted to hear what these wonderful components were like. Prices in the 70s/80s vs 2017 says to me that stuff was more affordable back then (more choice/more manufacturers/more shops?) When I did venture into to buy my second amp (the first was not really a hifi amp!) I was so in awe of everything on show and that those that worked there had special powers or knowledge and that if I so much dared to enter their world that I could not leave without buying some of their wares and it would in fact be downright rude. I bought a Rotel amp which was in fact very good. I later bought a pair of Mission 760's, the two were a very good match. As I earned more I up-graded to Audiolab and a Trichord Genesis and a Dac...and then more stuff...etc etc.... However my sense of just "being allowed" to grace the carpets and ogle the wares always stayed with me. I bought the Audiolab in 1995 and it was the last amp I bought from a shop.

The old racks-of-gear shops with the obligatory comparator used to be quite daunting places. I can't believe that we tolerated that as a mechanism for demonstration, but it's all that there was at the time. I suppose we should be grateful to Linn for the introduction of the single-speaker demo room (at least, I think it was them).
For me now, nothing short of a home demo would be acceptable.
