Could I please have some recommendations for a pair of headphones, just for home use with the hi-fi.
Something comfortable to chill out on the couch with, around £30 will do.
The only thing on my list so far is Superlux 668B.

Yup I'll give these a go John...
Are they the Audio-Technica ones?

I have these that I use with my iPod and they're excellent for the money. Thanks Paul - I've actually got those 'phones funnily enough! They are excellent with my phone but just fancied something a bit bigger for home use...

I see, well I like Grado, but to get a lot better than the Sennheiser's you'd probably need to buy a pair of SR-125i's which would set you back a lot more than your budget. Other option is to look out for second-hand, maybe give John's idea a suggest.

Important consideration -- do you need them to be sound-tight both ways? Grado for example, sound great if a bit bright, but can be heard all round the room. Nice cans, but not for private listening. You and those around you need to want to share those tunes! Also, what music? Headphones vary a LOT in presentation - what is great for rock can be fairly horrid for classical, and vicky verky. I've been on a bit of a headphone journey the last year or so and have tried dozens between £20 and £100 at used prices, and have kept 10!

Also, the design of the earpad can have a big effect on comfort. Many are 'on ear' and press directly against the ear. I seem to have sensitive ears and can't get on with them. I much prefer around-ear designs, where the earpad surrounds the ear and doesn't touch it. Much more comfortable! But you do look a bit of a prat as they tend to be large! And then there are in-ear types - they can sound fantastic, are sound-tight and can be excellent vfm - but once again, comfort is a very personal thing. As for wireless at these sort of prices -- I really wouldn't go there unless you dislike treble extension above about 8KHz and prefer a low rez boring sound!

Good questions Jerry - ideally I would have something that doesn't leak too much so I don't annoy the mrs late at night ... Needs to rock with both classical and er, rock ... Design wise definitely not wireless or in-ear ... Don't mind something a bit big and old skool.

I know this is not really relevant to the thread, but after a frustrating morning battling photobucket and flikr , I need to get it off my chest Especially since I can't move on this forum today without the system wishing me a "Happy Birthday from TAS" So - happy birthday to ME!

Thanks Jules They were a birthday present from Mrs Pinkie, and I can't take them off. I tried them first at Sud Claviers in Mirepoix, when we bought Mrs Pinkie a Yamaha Clavinova CLP575 for HER birthday. The delightful salesman said not to waste my money going for the 585, and if I had money to burn, why not listen to some good headphones? And produced the expected comic effect with his test track, as I turned round to look for the sax player in the room behind me and to my right. They are billed as best suited for studio use (long term wear) since their natural S Logic presentation, and magnetic shielding are said to reduce fatigue. Maybe - it's been a beautiful sunny day here, and we have been out in the Corbieres, so I have only listened for about 2 hours - but I keep playing more stuff Unusual presentation - compared to what I am used to, very solidly bass rich (thats maybe too much), and an odd presentation that can seem dull, until you realise just how much natural detail is there. Mostly - they don't sound like the music is inside your head. It's not quite like real speakers - but closer than anything other than maybe the old Stax Sigma (which I still occasionally look out for) Perfect for the birthday present I did by myself - a Line 6 Helix!

Thanks Martin, John
They are Pro900i. And for Jerry's benefit they fit over the ear, are definitely "snug", and leak very little sound out, although you seem to be able to hear outside noise a bit with them on.
They do give the feeling that the sound is outside your head. They are sufficiently comfortable that you quickly forget you are wearing them, and then the sounds seem to be in the room - even though evidently, they are not.
