Sorry, totally unrelated to Hifi, but I have just experienced something on an F1 website that I'm still in disbelief about.
I made a sarcastic comment about Lewis Hamilton being the rightful champion and then someone has posted a comment about how he'd fire me if he were my manager because he saw where I worked because to comment on this particular website you have to logon via your Facebook account and it mentions my role and the business I work for on there.
If that wasn't bad enough, this total moron then found my LinkedIn account and put details up about that my role and put the location that is on LinkedIn there too.
I cannot understand what provoked that sort of thing but also can't comprehend it as it is nothing I would even consider doing!
Interestingly the 'Contact' page for the website doesn't work, so I did a Whois lookup and found a group who I've emailed because I'd like that removed.
Anyway, I'm somewhat frustrated as you can imagine, but lost with what to do about it.

Sorry to hear about that Paul The web certainly has a few people that can be vindictive I would raise your concern with the moderators on the site

Nutters. just imagine what they would be like behind the wheel of an F1 car. Lots of people hate Hamilton and temperatures run high on both sides, but it's a whole other world to start hating on people who like him.
Take it as a sign that you need to review your privacy settings on FB and elsewhere. No matter how honest and "clean" you are, there are crazies out there who will find something to exploit.

There are some real dicks on the internet.
It's probably best to reserve your comments for websites which are properly moderated, or where the visibility is private such as Facebook or LinkedIn. I can't see how he posted a comment to your LinkedIn account?
I like reading Planet F1, for instance, but wouldn't dream of posting a comment there because of the moronic and utter dreck of comments made by other people.

You should stick you reliable forums like TAS. You can of course also access that comment page again and kick up enough stink on-line. And then do a search on the idiot who attacked you.

He copied, then pasted information from my LinkedIn account (including location) onto PlanetF1. It appears by his latest comment that I offended him by daring to challenge. Oh well a lesson well learned, I won't be contributing there again!

Did a search, he's known a Dale Tona which is clearly an alias. I think I'll just leave it and walk away. If I offended him by making a pretty innocent sarcastic comment and he reacted like this, what would he do if I really offended him??

I should have known better having worked in IT for my entire career!

Did a search, he's known a Dale Tona which is clearly an alias. I just looked him up. Red-neck racing driver of small mind, it would seem. I never use my Facebook account to sign in to other sites for this very reason. Too easy to link back to who you are.

What he did is probably illegal (anti-stalking laws) but hardly the crime of the century, incredibly annoying though it is. Unless you're employed in F1 there no way an employer would see your comments as reflecting the view of the company you work for. Just as Martin does, I look at Planet-F1 but I don't post there. Actually I've stopped looking at their forum as it's inhabited by too many lunatics so it's make my blood boil. I find it's best to avoid in case I'm in a mood to not hold back.

Indeed it shows hifi forums aren't unique in attracting such types: Too many people seem to be a combination of grumpy old man and petulant child. TAS seems to have created an armosphere in which such types don't thrive. Even the F1 debates here remain civil despite clearly differing opinions and likes/dislikes.

Photography / camera forums are pretty bad too, I suppose a good number of people like messing with hifi kit and cameras too. What does forum unpleasantness say about people? - some are unpleasant face-to-face though most are not - some are I expect closet meanies (or even have personality/behavioural issues) but don't act badly in person due to social norms or the fear of being thumped - mostly though people are great to get on with and it's the small minorities who spoil things for the majority Long live TAS and don't let it become too big a community.....

The type I can't stand is the keyboard warrior who changes personality when hiding behind the net. Very often meek as mice in real life. I don't trust anyone who is different when posting on forums or Facebook. Why be different? It's a form of cowardice, I think.

Welcome to the wonderful world of internet forums. If this is the first time something like this has happened to you then all I can say is congratulations. As a side note, what is someone with a nom de guerre that seems to reference the American "sport" of driving round in circles doing on a F1 site?

You have to grow thick skin, too. If it's someone with a silly handle and you know nothing about them and they bad mouth you, just dismiss them as irrelevant.

Usually I do but this one just took me by surprise as I was just not expecting the individual to take such defensive attitide over something that was in reality a low level sarcastic response.

He lit up over almost nothing. People like that are dangerous to be around. I suggest that a calm retreat is the grown-up thing to do and I'm glad that you did!

Just had a response from the admins at PlanetF1 following my email to them and I'm pleased to hear they've removed the comment. I've learnt a lesson though and won't be posting their again.
