Although I'm not currently in a position to obtain a decent sound, I'm still getting the urge to buy. I've just snapped up an Onix OA21 although it's going to a relative in the UK until I can collect it.
Ive had a few OA21s and one OA20. I liked them for their honest, pacey sound. I genuinely cannot remember if I've had one with a SOAP PSU before, as I've had so much kit and may be confusing Onix with the Obelisk 3s and XPACs that I've owned. Either way up, I am sure I've never had the chance to try an Onix with and without the SOAP. Has anyone here tried this pairing? If so, I'd love to hear about it, especially if you've compared the OA21 with and without SOAP.
Also does anybody know of a SOAP for sale? (assuming an owner of an OA21 wishes to "drop the soap")
Any other Onix related trivia or findings would be appreciated. I still love the design of these amps and my purchase was largely driven by the fact this example is the first tidy one I will have had.

Those amps were designed by Tony Brady who is currently the chief designer at Exposure.

He's a good bloke. I first heard an OA21 at the Sound Org in York with a pair os ES14s and a Xrexes/SME IV/ K9. Good system although the K9 was never a favourite of mine.

The first time I saw the Onix gear was also the first time I saw Exposure stuff. The company had some involvement with the little shop hifi at the bottom of Trafalgar Street in Brighton. My girlfriend at the time lived about ten doors up Trafalgar Street. Melos Audio was just near the top of the road and Jeffries Hifi was round the corner and a couple of hundred yards up London Road. All of that and probably the biggest concentration of secondhand record shops in the Western Hemisphere in a 1/2 mile radius - paradise!!
I only heard the amp + SOAP together once and I remember thinking that it was very similar in configuration and price to the Cyrus 2 / PSX combo that I had just bought. When I heard it, I knew I had made a big mistake by not checking out the Onix stuff first!

I don't think I've ever compared Onix and Exposure back to back. I did hear a VII and VIII with ES14s in the same Sound Org dem room on another day. Not an exact comparison as it was with an LP12 but the Exposures definitely sounded better to me. The styling of the Onix has always attracted me though. It will be mid-late January before I collect it but I'm already looking forward to it. I can't and won't drag my Spicas to Cyprus so it will have to make do with my modded Minstrels. That inevitably means I won't hear it anywhere near its best.

Thanks, Andr'e and you're right. Mine is the older OA21 with the square socket. That means it's a SOAP I need. I'm not sure if a SOAP2 is adaptable. It would be pretty easy to build a DIY SOAP but I love the looks of Onix casework so I'm unsure about that route.

I think they revised the SOAP 2 at some point. However the SOAP 2 should have an additional power output for the 'BWD-1' Tuner. I used to have an ONIX 'OA-21' years ago i used to use with Linn 'Kan'
