Thank you Chris. Yes it's a long standing issue. Further reading - International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative - www.ipci-usa.org/

Thank you, Chris. I wonder if there are natural or man-made alternatives?

Carbon fiber composite is a modern alternative which is readily available. You can even get fibreglass. A wood used for cheaper bows is Brazilwood.
When my son was auditioning bows a few years back it didn't take him long to choose the Pernambuco.

What would a typical Pernambuco bow cost, Jules?

Starting price a couple of hundred for something reasonable up to tens of thousands, sky's the limit really for an antique bow from a renowned maker.

This story about the cello playing 'Wednesday" on Netflix is incredible if true but I'm struggling to believe anyone could passably do an impression of a cellist after just two month's of lessons. Good PR story? Wonderful series though.

Dave Hurwitz's "Avoid Like Death Awards" 2022
Perchance some Rattle?

Absolutely priceless!
Dave Hurwitz is full of Xmas cheer for perennial offender Rattle, who was awarded "The Black Scarf of Lingering Stench" for his feckless travails on Bruckner Symphony 4 & Stravinsky Early Ballets.
Double the pain and a worthy winner I am sure but I will not be inflicting these on my ears as I can imagine the turpitude therein.

He is funny! I cannot imagine a Sibelius cycle that bad will ever pass through my music room. After all, Sibelius is difficult enough on a good day with a great performance.
Glad to hear Norrington come up once again in the turpitude category. I have yet to hear anything conducted by him with an interpretation which I like.

I laughed so much with that video.
I have the Sibelius set he hates so much but not listened to it yet.
It verges on arrogance to release a whole Sibelius cycle at such a young age - why not do it gradually to reflect your growing experience as Dave said ...

Wonder what Bach would have made of this?
It's rather fun.

I think Bach would have liked it. Plenty of show-offs back in his time as there are now.

Even MartinT might approve of this new monster organ built in Katowice, Poland - Europe's biggest! < The new instrument has over a million parts, more than 7000 pipes and 105 stops, and measures 13 metres high, nine metres wide and six metres deep. That gives it a volume of 150 square metres, roughly equivalent to a single-storey house. > www.classical-music.com/news/europes-biggest-new-concert-hall-organ-launches/

She is a phenomenon and doing this while she is still young and full of energy.
Good luck to her, I shall be listening to them all when they are released. The Philadelphia are a great choice to be doing it with, so many great performances from them over the years.

I'm going to have to see Tár at the cinema - talk about a polarising film!
In the meantime here are the thoughts of conductor Leonard Slatkin on the film and it's portrayal of the classical music world.

That's a perfect role for Cate Blanchett. I shall be watching it, too.
