In Germany during and after the war, they used cars which ran on gasified wood. Trees to the rescue again- Biofuel energy is nothing new!

It's one thing for Toyota to subdidise the Prius hybrids with battery replacements. Tesla I don't believe can do this as they don't have the financial muscle of Toytota. The problem for them is much greater too as we're talking pure electric cars. BTW to properly charge a Tesla you really want to use 3 phase....

The production of batteries for Teslas isn't so green and what happens when the batteries need replacing? I've heard some say the car is just about a write off at that point, I've no idea whether there's much in the write off thing but I'm sure the batteries won't be cheap. I've been in one of the Amsterdam Tesla taxis, they certainly are very rapid and quiet. A friend of mine has a deposit down towards a Tesla and he told me that free (sic) battery replacement when required was all part of the package. I don't know, just passing on what he told me.

A quick check for the 85 shows they have an 8 year unlimited mileage warranty. Outside of this the replacement cost is $45,000. On a 60 it's a 125,000 mile warranty. I don't know the details for sure, I expect though they have the new compact model setup in a way that works for the mass market. I've not gone into this in any detail, for sure it must be in the business model and TCA for the customer.

Some facts. VW changed the software in my car and now meets regs with no noticeable loss of performance as they claim. Might even be better and slightly lower fuel consumption. Diesels are here for a while simply because there is no alternative for torque and relatively decent fuel economy in larger vehicles. Batteries have not fully developed yet and there is lack of charging points which would cost billions to install. As pointed out the electricity to charge them is still not very green. Modern diesels are pretty clean and that can be improved upon. Obviously Renault are broke if they can't make engines to comply as VW can in spite of taking a hit financially over the false emissions. Result Renault will lose business and the Germans will mop up sales especially with diesel vans.

Don't agree, LPG is far cheaper and much much cleaner. I wouldn't call diesel clean by any stretch of the imagination!
No idea why it isn't far more popular than it is.
Good thing probably, they'd put the price up.

Good thing probably, they'd put the price up. Many years ago a firm I worked for converted most of it's van fleet to LPG, and the savings were worthwhile.
So, in this modern age I too am surprised that LPG use is not more widespread.
And yes, if it was, you can guarantee the buggers would increase the duty.

And just the other day there was talk of making aviation fuel from wood.
Yes, that idea has been around for a whille now. I think Branson was messing with it about 10 years ago.

Impressive. Is that full replacement, or on a sliding scale ? There's hardly anyone to ask. A few CR-Z forum owners have had their firmware updated to cycle the battery better and so keep it in good condition, but those were early 2011 cars. I know of no-one who has actually had the battery replaced either in the UK or the US. Honda do seem to be rather good at honouring warranties so we all believe that it would cover a straight battery swap.

It's interesting that Honda gave up all their hybrid models in favour of their new Earth Dreams diesel engine. Wrong turn, in hindsight?

I'm not sure what the current situation is, but I always thought fuel cells were the way forward.
Didn't Honda have the lead at one time ?

They've got one of those hundred grand Teslas in a shop near me. Great car. There's cheaper models to come as well - think £18000 and £32000 are the prices but that's 3-5 years away, The hundred grand model is 0-60 in 2.5 seconds! £12,000 deposit then £500pm - bit pricey but low running costs. £4 to fully charge it. THATS the way forward. Speaking of Teslas, this on YouTube made me laugh.
