Damn and blast! It looks like I have a laser tracking problem in my Ayre player. Recently, I've been suffering from the odd mute during playback and wondering at it. Last night, I found entire CDs that wouldn't play properly. Interestingly, SACDs play fine (different laser if I understand the Pioneer mech used).
I've just contacted the excellent Mark Dolbear of Electromod to see if he still stocks the Pioneer mech for it. I hope this isn't going to go the way of the Krell SACD player (Philips mech unobtainable).

Isn't it more likely to be either a cleaning or tracking issue? I'm skeptical of many "laser failures" because people who repair players for a living say such things are relatively uncommon and the fix is often not a laser replacement. I had a link to a great article. I'll see if I can find it. Edit: this was the link. I'm sure many will have seen it before but it may be worth another look. lampizator.eu/LAMPIZATOR/TRANSPORT/laser/Laserology.htmljust a thought, but you had a heating failure recently. Maybe it's condensation residue?

I've done the usual laser cleaning things. I'm going to flip the lid tonight and have a go at careful wet cleaning with an ear bud. I'll certainly try everything before I give up and send it away.

After flipping the lid off the Ayre and carefully moving the sled into view, I've cleaned the lens with an earbud and some acetone. Tracking is better, thankfully, but still not perfect. I'll await Mark's response on the Pioneer drive mech availability.
Meanwhile, I found another fuse! Hidden at the back, just under the IEC inlet, is a small drawer mounted 0.5A 20mm mains fuse. Searching in my bag of spares I found a 1A HiFiTuning fuse and slipped it into place. A couple of Cleanwaves with the P10 later, I put Yello's Toy on. It may be my imagination but high impact recordings like this benefit even more and it sounded better than ever, with startling clarity and even deeper, well defined, bass notes.

Have you, or has anyone, tried cleaning the inside part of the laser as shown in the link I attached ? It looks fiddly but I'd try it as a last resort. Maybe not on something expensive if it's my first try though.

I did look, Andrew, but could not find a way of getting under the lens. I'm afraid of trashing it completely.

I'd be very wary too, unless it was a cheap player or something I had no other options with.

Bad, bad news. Ayre have run out of Pioneer drive mechs for the C-5xe. Apparently it uses the drive from a DV-45 but that doesn't seem to be available either.
I fear the Ayre is looking at a slow death if I can't find a replacement drive. I don't know exactly what I'm going to do next, being as it plays CD, SACD and DVD-A and is the best damned CD player I've ever heard.

I just checked EBay. Completed listings shows the DV-45 selling for peanuts in the USA. Maybe you can pick up a couple of donor machines to future-proof it.

I'm trying at the moment, Andrew. The problem is the three I can see for sale don't want to ship abroad. I'm contacting them...
