The power company are re-wiring all of our village, and erecting new transmission poles, so we've been on a mobile generator since Saturday. Apart from the constant hum of the thing down the road, audible all night, it's not as bad as it seems although we had a cut sometime yesterday during the day. The P10 is showing 1.7% incoming distortion.
The bad news is we'll be on the generator until next Saturday. The good news is that the line impedance should reduce once we're cut over to mains again so I'm looking forward to even better quality incoming power.

It should make a nice difference Out of the mains stuff I done. The best improvement was when the house got re-wired and I was not even expecting a change

I had 4 or 5 improvements when we had the house refurbed. Living on site in an extended garage Had no idea what happened. Noticed the sound improvement and spoke to the sparky day after Wound him up each time with "What did you do to the mains yesterday ?!" Told him he done good

I've now sorted the CD collection. Rock/Pop/Blues/Jazz span the first 8 towers, Classical the next 6 (lighter colour). Everything is A-Z with space in each cell for growth without having to re-shuffle. They are IKEA Gnedby (previously called Benno). Lovely! I can see your ELP 's/t' & 'Tarkus' sets

Power is off again. They're switching us back over to mains from generator. Here's hoping for even better quality power afterwards.

Back on proper mains now. 1.5% THD in, 0.1% THD out. 239V in, 235V out. Not bad.

I was taking down two nondescript looking wall speakers today, in preparation for decorating the bedroom. On closer inspection, it turns out they're Linn Unik wall speakers! There's another eight of them to remove in other rooms. The previous owners had built in some sort of piped music system with little control panels everywhere but taken away the control electronics.
Methinks the job lot will go on eBay.

Would have thought being Linn speakers, they should sell quite easily on eBay.

Recently visited Martin in his new gaff Nice room, nice sound. The bass and lower midrange have more volume and oomph. Initially I thought it was at the expense of detail, but on second thoughts it may be better balanced. Playing tracks I know well I was able to hear things not heard before. Following day I played a lot of those tracks on my not dissimilar system. Bass and lower midrange lack the volume, weight and body I heard from Martin's system. I think it is a 'mains like' improvement and Martin certainly has more mains tweaks than me. The direct connection from the cooker mains spur to the P10, the many mains items he has from Vertex, PS Audio Harvester, Isotek, Russ Andrews, Kemp, Sercal and Tacima adding substantial improvements are, I think the key. Certainly they are in a different league to moving house and something for me to investigate. I have some Russ Andrews boxes I need to bring into play. I will think about some room deadening as well. Won't be able to get his direct mains connection as I am at the other end of the house to where the mains comes in, and that is overhead which may be less good. The best system I have heard

Just stumbled across this thread. Would love a room that size Martin, well chuffed for you. Is the sound you're now experiencing a lot different to that of your old listening room ? I'm guessing those lovely big Ushers can breath and be pushed a little more in the extra space ?

Thanks, MikeMusic , always good sharing music with you. robbiegong the improvement in SQ in the new room is quite astonishing. As you say, the big Ushers have room to breath with the result that they go deeper and tighter than before with a big airy soundstage and really excellent focus. Everything is more natural, less pushed and seemingly with greater headroom than before.

Been thinking on this ... I thought the differences between our systems sounded 'mains' like. - Oh how very technical You say it is the room - and you knew your old room better than me. How much do you attribute the improvement to the room and how much to the mains ? Did you hear the system with the P10 plugged into a socket ?

Well, it's a bit of a guess Mike. Knowing how my previous mains setup was not bad, I would attribute 75% of the improvement to the room. I can hear the room 'shouting' less and the bigger volume of air allowing the bass to develop. It sounds more dead when I talk at normal volume, less is coming back at me. The new floor doesn't budge and allows me to decouple the speakers on rubber feet while the old room had the speakers on cones through carpet onto concrete over an air gap. That screwed with the bass quite considerably. What faults the new room has are more benign.

I remember the differences when the P10 arrived and I started playing with MCRU Ultimate mains cables - it was that sort of difference. More thump in the bass and solidity in the mid range

There is a certain structural element that I do enjoy having now.
