I wonder how the Monaco would compare to the reborn Technics. Hard to organize Mark and would both need same cartridge on. Do you still have the same TT that won the competition in AOS a few years ago? Yes, I appreciate that. As far as I know Keith owns the only Monaco in the country and 12" Tri-Planar arms are hardly thick on the ground. I guess it was more of a rhetorical question really. Regarding my deck, yes I still have it (and use it). There have been a few changes (looks the same though), improved power supply, modified magnetic bearing, improved armboard, improved record termination. However, I have been working on a wholesale improved model for about 15 years (slow progress ) but it finally looks like some progress is being made (just developed the motor mount).

I have watched a few TT projects come and go by others, some hobbyist efforts, some wanting to be commercial ventures, there are 2 currently in progress that I am watching, BOTH are direct drive, one is nearly finished by the look of it, details here. www.onkk.co.uk/The other the prototype was built a few months ago which I was lucky enough to hear and it was stunning but production cannot commence until a few bits are ironed out.

The problem is attention to looks suggests a Caliburn price tag aimed at the rich. Problem is rich people buy Ferraris and gold plated Ipods while those obsessing about a modern DD TT design are relatively impoverished audiophiles.

There are lots of great old DD designs to obsess over and even acquire. Meanwhile, we can wait for a lottery win for the new designs(!) But seriously, worthy high end products always yield benefits in trickle-down technology.
A new DD design is a worthy goal, a gold plated iPhone just mutton dressed as lamb.

Looks like the plinth has been inflated by about 40 psi too much!

What I am suggesting is the market for this is limited as most of the people who would like to buy it won't be able to afford it. Then perhaps the new Technics sounds just as good? This is the problem with hi-fi in that the quality mass to middle market has disappeared. Mind it's hard work finding people that will fork out for something decent even when a relative bargain so I see why this TT is being pushed as something of a lifestyle product.

Oh agreed, very limited. However, the new Technics is sufficiently pricy to put most non-enthusiasts off, let alone something like the Monaco. I've said it before but most people will not pay for quality.

I don't know, there are a lot of turntables that are a lot more expensive than the Technics, the Monaco being a prime example (I suspect the Onkk will be another).

But sales are few, and I suspect very few in this country.
Low volume, high prices. As it is with all luxury goods.
