Title says it all really. Is there such a thing as an affordable pair of horns - s/h on EBay there's a couple but I've no idea what I'm looking for!

If you were into DIY, a pair of Frugalhorn 3 speakers might be the best thing for you.

Ha,my DIY skills are simply non existant! Probably not the best route for me to take. I do know one of our esteemed forum members may have a pair in the pipeline so hoping to hear them.

ElectricBeach Frugel 3 are extremely good value and will outperform a lot of speakers costing 4 to 6 times the price

Yeah,I've been following that thread. I'd have a pair tomorrow if I could afford and justify them.

And they're gorgeous. That dark wood and faux leather does it for me. Has anyone played with them with valve amplification?

I hear them with a valve amp and they sound very good I also heard them with Sovereign beast of amp and that was quite frightening

I've happily ran a few pairs of Impulse horns in a 15x12 space. H7, H6 and Lalis were all great. My favourites were H6 although the Lalis were close and far better built and finished. I'd have a pair of H6 any day of the week.

The Frugel 3 performed extremely well in my medium sized room.

Why did you let the H6 go, Andrew?

I run my frugels with kel 84 mono blocks at the moment, a fine combo IMHO.

Why did you let the H6 go, Andrew? I think I moved and started again. They were seriously nice speakers without any downside. What I liked best was they way they put the music in the room without seeming to fire it right at you.

I remember that attribute of them, too.

A system containing bi-amped H2s is the only time a hifi has made me literally leap out of my seat with dynamics - it scared the poo out of me!

My mate bought H2s and was also scared of them. If I'd ever had a big enough room, I'd have bought a pair. Used prices are rising but they are still a lot of speaker for the money. H6 don't have the same scale, but then again very little does. Still, they behaved impeccably in my room and weren't that fussy about side walls.

Sad that Impulse are no more. What happened to them?

They were bought by an Indian Chemist who I think was responsible for the range that included the Lali and Ta'us. The former owner of Impulse (Brian Taylor) went on to form Aspara Acoustics and make yet more incredible horns. More info on Impulse here: www.acoustica.org.uk/impulse/impulse.html

The Aspara are the modern equivalent of Impulse. Not heard any of their models but they have gone out of business. (A search revealed dissolved in 2013). The Aspara models look similar to Impulse and have similar model designations.
