Hello all. I'm Myles and I don't spend a lot on hi-fi. I've just smashed my record of £115 on an Inca Designs Oberon amp by buying a Rega TTPSU for £130! I look forward to participating here.

OK. I'm not at home so I'll do it from the top shelf down:-
Rega Planar 3 with 24v motor upgrade, TTPSU, tangospinner aluminium subplatter, acrylteller platter, Edwards big belter, Shure M91ED with JICO SAS.
Creek OBH-15 phono amp with uprated PSU. MF V-CANS 2 with Grade SR60 cans.
Rega Planet Mk1 CDP.
Inca Designs Oberon integrated amp.
Pioneer DV868-avi DVD player for SACD duties.
Triangle Titus stand mounts.
The speakers are new in this week and I have them on stupidly low stands so am not getting the benefit yet. That'll be remedied soon....on the cheap hopefully!!!

From Aretha to MF Doom, with The Who, Floyd, Dexys, The Smiths, Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Carter USM, the Beach Boys and The Clash in between.
I'll get some pictures up when I get a chance.

Even though I have had a vinyl source for about ten years and bought vinyl new and used in that time, I am really enjoying getting into it properly.

Hi Myles and here's a warm welcome from me too. Sometime it would be great if you could start a thread about all these bolt-ons you've got for your Rega. There is a healthy little industry making such things and I expect a lot of folks might be interested to read about your findings. Looking forward to some photos too! Welcome again, it's nice to have you here.
Cheers

I have time on my hands at the moment and being away from the music, I'll not be bothered while I write up on the rega experience.

It's really good to see how you've added inexpensive bolt-ons to make your system better.
How does the Planet compare with the Pioneer on CD playback?

I don't really play CD on the Pioneer but from memory the Regards is less analytical and boogies along nicely. I guess that's the Rega way. The Pioneer plays the SACDs very well. I have compared it to other universal players and it hasn't been bettered yet. It was quite pricey in its day, but I got it for under £40! In fact, it was bundled in as part of a work leaving gift; they asked what I wanted and I told them!

Nice! I have a BDP-LX55 and it plays SACDs very well. I would use it but the Ayre plays them marginally better, still it's nice to have options.

Ello Interesting the used bargain path you've followed as so much of it isn't well known to most I think.. For the Planet, what interconnects do you use? I doubt you'd find them cheap enough unless you can make some yourself, but the Rega Couple (Klotz AC110 with Neutrik pro plugs) was part of the 'sound' of the Planet, used in its design process and it used to sell for fifty quid. Brian on AOS makes the [at least as good] MC5000 based interconnects with nice MS-Starline plugs for £50 or so and he's not making masses out of it in terms of the labour involved in doing it as neatly as he does. P.S. Do you still have the RP3 inner hub and platter? When you changed these, could you hear a difference? When I was tweaking regas, I left the existing platter and bearing alone as it's well engineered (usually), gone the white-belt- route and maybe truied a NAS Spacemat 'cos it's cheap, or a Ringmat, which really worked on stock Planar 3's at the time. Not criticising at all, just expressing a different path from stuff I worked with

Not at at all, just expressing a different path from stuff I worked with I haven't adopted a scientific approach to buying hi-fi; I have always tried to grab bargains as they come up. For example I picked up a set of Elas for £40 back along. The Rega deck was less than £100, and I sold the Planar 2 for a profit. I just come up lucky every now and then! I am using a set of bargain Neutrik Profi-plugged RCA for the Rega. They seem to be the best match for the amp and CDP. On the Planar, I changed the rubber band (!) to the white one and didn't notice too much difference, but when I went to the ally subplatter with the belt it was noticeable with long held notes, especially piano. It has been said that the rega subplatter is often just not round. I think the round platter straightens it all out a bit. I did buy a bearing from boca bearings in the states; a little ceramic number. However, the biggest change has been with the 24v motor and TTPSU. The noise floor has dropped considerably and none of the sound, from the lowest bass trough the mids and into a realistic treble. The triangles have really brought another dimension to the music too; surprising given the size of the cabinets.

Hi Myles. You've got some really nice-sounding items in your setup. The Planet is a real favourite of mine. I'm sure you will score for decent tall stands at a low price on EBay. Most people list stands as collection only and they tend to go cheap as a result.

The triangles have really brought another dimension to the music too; surprising given the size of the cabinets. Ok, thanks for explaining. I must say that if you ever look again at the stock inner hub, the important faces ARE turned/skimmed accurately and the float glass platter usually lays dead flat with vertical movement at the edge usually very slight indeed - in fairness to the original obviously.
The tiny hub and rubber cord drive is an issue as you found. use too tight a band (the Edwards is supposed to be like this), wow may well be reduced as shown by HFW, but drive noise goes up. maybe the 24V motor and external power supply sorts this out, I haven't compared. The RP8 uses a twin belt system, but again, noise can be an issue I'm told by two RP8 owners..
Thanks again

My wife told me that our son is now listening to Lil' Wayne! Well, it just so happens that I might have a CD at the back of my collection so I threw it on for him. He was impressed with how it sounded. I then put on the Brothers In Arms SACD and realised how far my kit has come in the last year. I have my eye on a couple of pairs of stands that are near-ish to me on the bay. I reckon a set of heavy stands will open it all up even more.
