That's an impressive bit of fabrication and wiring layout. Very nice work, indeed.

Thanks chaps. I enjoy building stuff and over the past decade, have built around 30 different valve amps ranging from a simple 0.75W single ended amp based on old British wartime triodes, to the present pentode behemoth. I have also built speakers and am currently using a tapered 5ft tall pair of expanding, quarter wave transmission lines with down firing ports. Here is a link to a page that was first made around ten years ago. My tapered quarter wave speakers are an ongoing project to try to match good sound with good and aesthetics and WAF. DiY'ers in the USA are the biggest fans. The bottom picture in the link is of my first Metronomes. These were used with twin active subs. Click on each picture to see bigger and more detailed views. www.frugal-horn.com/metronome.html

Here are my speakers. These are a grown up version of the small ones in the link. I have had these since September 2011. They were built for me by Colin Topps of Edingdale Speaker fame. I designed them about eight years ago with valuable assistance from Scott Lindgren of Reiver Acoustics, who helped me tweak up the dimensions and port size. They remained an academic exercise until they were eventually built three years later and have been in the system ever since. On the unit next to them is one of a pair of Single Ended valve mono blocks I had at the time.

Drivers consist of an 8 inch, Fostex FF225WK wideband driver and a Fostex FT17H horn tweeter to help out with the HF.
There has been a change since this picture was taken. The horn HF unit has been replaced with a Monacor RBT-95 planar magnetic driver.

Well done to all those who make stuff like this *from scratch* and who make them so beautifully.

Here is a retro 1950s style push pull amp I made in 2007, nicknamed "The Jetson" It used 6AS7 output valves and produced 8wpc. This was funky

And another from 2009. This time a single ended triode amp using Sophia Electric mesh plate PX25s driven by RCA 801As. Input stage was a pair of RCA Globe UX227s from the 1930s. 6wpc

Leccy bill is not a problem as the amps I built were mostly low powered stuff. That's the beauty of having efficient speakers, you don't need mega power to drive them to ear splitting levels. My current push pull amp is a lot more powerful than the SET "sound effects machine" in the last picture, but because it is class AB it idles at a very low power level, keeping the bills down To me the hobby is these days (heresy!) not really about hi-fi as such, been there done that. For me now, it is about creativity and making hand crafted things that not only promote an enjoyment of music in the home, but also look good in a domestic environment. I don't have a listening room, so the system has to be shared with my wife and family. Looks become very important under those circumstances, so I go out of my way to produce gear that looks the biz and becomes a talking point with visitors. I'll see if I can dig up a few more pics, if I can remember where I put them that is.
