My wife and me started this tradition many years ago whereby we have red and white meat, sea food, and vegetarian. This was in response to a Christmas meal one day when one of the guests informed us that she was vegetarian... From that day on we made sure that there was more than one thing to pick from. This year it is beef, duck, prawns, okro soup, and the usual suspects in between. A friend of us, who lives about 15 minutes walking from us, has invited us to pop by after Christmas lunch. The only requirement is that we bring some drinks.

Last years was my Mum's last Christmas and this year Jill's Mum will be 92, it's a family affair, not for point scoring.
Jill my wife will cook a traditional British Christmas Dinner, or late Lunch in fact. There will be a big selection of everything including over half a dozen vegetable dishes and red and white wine and probably bubbly. Now why would I bother to go into intimate details, what point would it serve ? And who would be interested ?

It's not what you choose to eat, Jules, it's the being pompous and pretentious about it! Isn't this thread against the 'no inter forum baggage' rule of this, your, forum? Merry Christmas all...

Until a name was mentioned, most contributors assumed this was about a general way of describing food and that was the way the discussion was running. And how it continued after the name was removed.

I'd have no problem with eating the menu on the 1st post, sounds really lovely.
What I'd question is the mentality of those who boast in advance, as if they were better than others who have more modest fare.
I appreciate "poncy" food now and then, I don't mind "basic" food at all but every now and then something different is appreciated.
My pet hate, food wise, is the average Toby inn (other brands are available) carvery --- yuk,yuk and more yuk.

Did they - I doubt it. The whole of the original post is a verbatim quote from another forum, from someone who has no posting rights here. Perhaps you guys should link up with that other forum who's existence is purely to bitch about those on other forums. Anyway, I'm off to enjoy Christmas with my family now - best wishes.

Isn't this thread against the 'no inter forum baggage' rule of this, your, forum? Merry Christmas all... Not since it has been moderated. Merry Christmas!

Perhaps you guys should link up with that other forum who's existence is purely to bitch about those on other forums. Completely unnecessary. We were all unaware that the o/p was a quote, and now that it's been and gone, and the name removed, the thread can carry on as lightweight entertainment. You wouldn't want to be poncy on Christmas Day, would you?

Exactly. Re-reading it, in the comments made before the mention of the name, the only inkling that any of the replies were made in the knowledge of where the quote was from came from Gary. And he named no-one.
What's more we don't have a rule that things said on other forums can't be discussed. And additionally, as far as I know Andre and the other person don't have a long standing argument concerning the appropriate way of describing food and wine, so I see no baggage here.

I am now feeling ashamed to have mentioned what we are having this year. I shall have to be more careful with what I eat..

It seems pomposity is not just confined to food then?

I think someone once said something like "Peace and goodwill to all". I'd like some of that.

You need bitching and whining and forum rivalry. What else are middle-aged men going to do on hi-fi forums. Talk about hi-fi? Don't be daft.

I think the ratio on TAS is much more towards hi-fi and music than 'bitching and whining'. That's a ratio I can live with.
