Really apprciate the reasoning behind why those drivers sound better. Makes sense even to me.

I run a basic Lap top with i tunes ripped to flac. I reckon if you try a usb convertor to let you utilise optical into the dac things will improve. Stan does one which is highly rated but requires loading software that was beyond me. A second hand v link or similar with the fisual optical cable recommended would work well. From experience usb cables do make a difference IMHO. Belkin are good vfm. Supra and Furatech are both very good but quite a bit more expensive. Stans optical implementation on the Caiman 2 is noticeably better than others I have tried. I think Dave (DSJR) recommended a convertor too. Not a lot of cash and as long as they don't take any faff to install, I don't mind having a go. The Fisual optical cables that Paul recommended appeal to me, being made with glass and also being great value. My my wife loves the venture into digital. She's not keen on touching kit these days, but she can just sit with her iPad and play anything she chooses. Looks like our household has been "dragged kicking and streaming" into computer audio. (Sorry!)

If you get up and running you should try Spotify. Not far off CD quality and a marvellous way to discover new music. Try the free version to see if it floats yer boat-the premium version is a tenner a month and worth every penny.

Had a quick play with my M2Tech HiFace2 connected, and the version of iTunes I have on the computer doesn't give me any options other than Direct Playback or Windows Audio Session, which is not particularly good. It doesn't even acknowledge the change of hardware, which I find especially annoying. The sooner you get rid of the heap-o-shite that is iTunes the better in my opinion.

I'm really keen on using iPad with Apple Remote, so I will probably be sticking with iTunes and changing to a Mac Mini soon. All I really want it to do is play my recorded CDs so it's pretty straightforward for that. Right now, it's great not to have any PC related hassles.
I haven't looked into Spotfy but will certainly have a look at what's on offer, thanks.

Changing over to a Mac would improve the situation with respect to audio taking priority over system sounds. There are relatively few audio devices that require Mac OS drivers, unlike the situation with Windows. The Direct Playback option in iTunes really is that, and it takes priority.
You should find things sound a bit better using a Mac Mini.

Thanks for that. It's the whole "doing things in the background" and overriding what I'm trying to do that really pees me off with PCs. that and a thousand other things
