I think the Tirna route is my only viable option unless Stan has a mk3 round the corner. Martin, thanks for the audio description -it has really got me thinking as the Caiman 2s performance I can happily live with as is. Anybody on cans that can expand on the changes the mods make? It's quite a lot more fun on headphones, even with just the mods that do not require the removal of the PCB. Even if and when I make any production changes that would produce a MK3 I would always to my best to come up with mods for existing models already hooked up in systems around the world. I have for instance only just finished a major firmware update to the Bushmaster MKI (TC-7530DC), and had it checked out by a couple of BMI owners. The GFU is not "must have" mods, but mods to keep the DIYers happy during the long, cold, winter months.

Aaaaaargh! Doing my own was tricky enough, I'm not going to write off someone else's DAC!

I don't blame you. I was thinking this would be relatively easy until I saw the size of the components involved.

You need a steady hand and a little bravery.

Plus a lot of us need glasses, possibly a magnifier

Given the technical difficulties that have been raised as far as modding the PCB is concerned, I shall put this mod away. So those who have already installed it or started on it will still be able to receive updated information etc. The PDF file will be removed from my server, but you will still be able to get a copy via email.

Any news about the newest firmware for CMII - is it already in production?

Ah, might MKIII been coming ;-) Yo be precise it is about the mod not firmware, but because new firmware requires that mod it could be clear. I got email fr Stan that he stopped the development thanks to that.

I read through most of this thread and would like to bump krzysztof's question .. will there be a production Caiman with these mods in the near future ? Thank's. edit: or would Stan consider shipping a standard Caiman 2 with all the bits and pieces necessary for the update (at an extra cost of course) so as to eliminate the need to source such small quantities ? Btw. soldering the tiny SMD parts would scare me a little

Btw. soldering the tiny SMD parts would scare me a little I am looking at the costs and possibilities. A modded version would attract far lower sales due to the increased manufacturing and retail price. But the minimum manufacturing quota from the various sub-contractors is 200 to 300 for the mechanical parts. So a figure of between £300 to £400 is easily reached once all the costs are taken into account. And at that sort of price the modded version would have to be able to produce a substantial increase in performance and satisfaction.

I had a word with Jimmy at www.tirnaelectronics.co.uk and he is more than happy to do part or all of the mods for anyone who is not confident enough to tackle the mod. Jimmy has done mods on a variety of my DACs for mainly UK members of another UK forum that many of us have been and/or are members of. From what I understand, due to his previous contacts with customers from those mods, he is regularly being asked by forum members to help out with all sorts of soldering requirements. I have asked Jimmy to join us on TAS, because there may well be many occasions where it is handy to know someone to fall back on when a soldering project you have in mind is a bridge too far. You can contact Jimmy via the number or email address on his website. I e-mailed Jimmy about a week ago, and I am still waiting a response. I will give it another week before I try and call him, although it's not always practical with my job. The noise of jet engines does not make conversation very easy.

don't say that I don't have the $$$ You can always start off with a Caiman MKII and do the mods yourself.

yep, but I hate sourcing little bits and pieces. A plastic bag with the bits and a quick tutorial would be great, but I can understand if you don't wan't to be bothered with that.

There is a thread dedicated to the mod, including details on the parts. And it is in this same section as well!
