Whilst I like a sense of realism when listening I actually would not like to hear a real sax or drums being played in my listening room it would be far to over powering

Chris, the drum sound on the Sheffield Lab recording James Newton Howard and Friends remains my benchmark as the most realistic drum recording I've ever heard. I don't know if you have it but I would love to have your view on it if you do. I haven't heard it Martin. This is pretty good for assessing drums

I learned the hard way with 30 years & a hell of a lot of money down the drain. I hate CDee with a passion but they did proove to me that the old LP's were of medicore quality sound wise imho.. I will never ever budge now from Electronic Dance music via 12" single because these things show that my stereo can sound o so good. Electronic dance music should be of the very best sound recording than any other music form these days because of the nature it is made & recorded.

Thanks, I've found a copy on Amazon. There's some "out there" jazz playing on it. Not all of it, but there is some. I hope you get on with it.

This is a great album for drumming. Correction, it's a great album full stop. Languta is a superb example of playing to the pulse, not the beat. It's natural, organic rhythm (maaaann!).

A few years ago we made some test recordings for a well known audio company some of which were used to demonstrate the use of compression techniques on drums, the first set were recorded with the obligatory 5-8+dB compression and the matching half so to speak were done with a maximum of 2dB or less. Now all drums even on very well recorded albums are compressed to a degree, however not to the usual 'Radio one edit mix' We also recorded these tracks at 24/96Khz when next in the studio I will dig them out and put them on the website so you guys can download and use them. Will load a straight red book and high resolution for you chaps. Not next week though very busy with the Windsor show

I have a copy of that James Newton Howard & Friends album winging its way, courtesy of Discogs Marketplace. It's no wonder the drums sound great - it's Jeff Porcaro and his Dad doing all the percussion.

I hope the CD proves to be as good.

So, where does making the recording sound like the "real thing" come into the equation ?
Personally, I do like female vocal music, but I hope my system plays everything to a good standard. I just buy from Nick, assuming he knows whats what.

I just buy from Nick, assuming he knows whats what. Well he did design Colin's 300B SET monoblocs, and he also suggested wiring the Edingdales in a series/parallel configuration (bring the efficiency up and increase the radiating area of the drivers). All done long, long ago,far away in the mists of time .... Both of which you now benefit from in your audio setup

That James Newton Howard & Friends CD has landed, and it's sounding very good indeed. If only other artists/record companies took this much care .......
